Looking for the best ~50W fiber laser under $1.5-3k 8==D Is what Im looking for unrealistic?

Hey everyone, I’m being impulsive again, and looking for some advice before I pull the trigger on my first fiber laser.

I recently bought a house, so money is a little tighter than it used to be, but I wanted to buy myself something I could learn with. I’m completely new to lasers and will be learning from the ground up, so I’m trying to make a smart purchase instead of buying something I’ll immediately outgrow.

My budget is roughly $1,500–$3,000, and I’m mainly interested in engraving metals. Colored engraving capabilities are cool, but not a necessity to me. I’ll mostly be working with steel, but I’d also like the ability to do copper, aluminum, knives, coins, tools, etc. I’m looking for something capable of doing deeper, higher-quality engraving, not just surface marking.

I already have a Gweike 50W CO2 laser (that I still havent fired up), so this would be to add metal capabilities to my shop. If the fiber laser could also handle some light cutting, that would be a huge bonus.

Right now I have access to a ComMarker B4 30W locally for around $1,000. It seems like a good deal, but I keep hearing that I’ll “outgrow” a 30W quickly if I’m serious about depth and production. Is that actually true, or is a 30W a smarter starting point for a beginner?

Ideally, I’d like to find something around 50W with:

- a good laser source (JPT, MAX, Raycus, etc.)

- a reliable controller and LightBurn compatibility

- a larger work area (200x200mm or bigger would be great)

- the ability to do repeat/batch work

-tool serialization

- room for upgrades or modifications

One thing that’s really important to me is flexibility. I like what Gweike G-series offers with their more portable/handheld-style fiber options, where you can bring the laser to larger or awkward parts instead of being limited by the work area. I’d love to have the ability to engrave things like toolboxes, body panels of vehicles, or odd-shaped items that won’t fit under a standard machine. I just got a couple toolbox sets from Harbor Freight that I'd like to victimize.

I know true handheld capability comes with tradeoffs, so I’m open to split-style machines, removable heads, pivoting/swivel heads, or a custom setup that gives me that flexibility without completely sacrificing accuracy.

I’m also not against buying a used machine if it makes sense, or even looking at clones of the bigger brands if they’re actually good machines. I know there are a lot of Chinese fiber lasers out there, and I’m trying to separate the good ones from the junk.

For those of you who have been down this road:

- Would you buy the 30W ComMarker for $1k or go straight to 50W?

- What 50W machines would you actually recommend in the $1.5–$3k range?

- Are there any AliExpress/eBay/direct manufacturer machines that are surprisingly good?

- What source/controller combinations should I be looking for or avoiding?

- Are there any clone machines that are replicating bigger, name brands that can be had for half the price?

I appreciate any advice. I’d rather spend a little more now and buy the right machine than upgrade again in a year.
