I built an open source samsung notes alternative

Samsung Notes used to be my go-to note-taking app, but a handful of annoyances bugged me enough that I decided to build my own from scratch.

What makes it different:

- 100% free and open source (MIT License)

- Infinite canvas - super fast gpu resident rendering unlike most other note taking apps😅

- Improved handwriting experience

- A bunch of extra features Samsung Notes doesn't offer

An open source note taking app for Android

I built a handwriting notes app for android

What it is:

  • Super minimal UI. Everything is accessible from one single toolbar, no nested menus to dig through while you're trying to write.
  • Customisable: theme, accent colour, page defaults, pen presets, pen side-button action.
  • Feature rich.
  • PDF import for annotation, and PDF export that stays vector.
  • Can stream the canvas to a browser on the same network if you need to show it on a projector.
  • No accounts, no telemetry, no ads, no cloud. Uses Android's Storage Access Framework, so no broad storage permission.

If you give it a try, I'd really like to know how it holds up against whatever you're using now, and what you'd want changed.

XNotes: A handwriting-first note taking app

I take all my notes by hand and basically live inside PDFs. Every Android app I tried got something wrong: laggy ink, clunky PDF markup, or it flattened my notes into dead pixels the moment I exported.

So I built my own.

If you're a notes person or you mark up PDFs daily, I'd love for you to give it a try and tell me how it feels
