How do you feel about your team using casual “text shorthand” with you in work communications?
I’m an edible in, so I know this is a silly question. I’m just curious!
I oversee a decent-sized team ranging in ages and backgrounds. We work in a corporate, office environment. Some of my more junior/younger team members will use text shorthand in work instant messages. I understand that’s the nature of instant messaging, but I swear my brain can’t keep up!
In the past few weeks, I’ve seen things like “mb” (maybe), “sb” (somebody), and more that I can’t remember. I don’t mind text shorthand at all — I often use “lol,” “omg,” and “btwn” (between) — but I’m solidly millennial so I can’t keep up with the newer shorthand.
It’s not really a major issue. I just ask for clarification. But it does sometimes irritate me because I oversee multiple teams and am sometimes trying to quickly get an answer or respond to messages between meetings. If it really were to be an issue (or becomes one), I’d of course discuss it/deliver feedback.
I realize this makes me sound super old, but I’m in my early 30s!! I just often find it hard to decipher an acronym, especially when I’m asking myself if it could be an abbreviation for a work-related program/system/whatever.
Just curious if it’s a shared pet peeve or if nobody else has this issue 😅
