Self imposed progression ceiling.
So I am currently an SPS and on track to make associate sometime in the near future.
I’ve done well in my career and progressed pretty fast post uni and I enjoy the job (mostly). However, I’ve known from pretty early on that I wasn’t someone who was driven by ‘climbing the ladder’ and progressing all the way to partner / director level.
To be quite honest, I’m a pretty simple person and lead a pretty simple life and I really just want to come into work, graft hard, do my job well and go home. I really can’t see the additional pressures / targets / responsibilities of being a director being something that would suit me or I would want in my life. I am also not money obsessed and I feel once I got to an associate level salary I would be comfortable with that and not be desperate for more. In my mind I’d be content to reach associate / senior associate level and progress no further.
The one thing that’s always been in my mind is how this might be received by those at senior level. If for example my career continues to go well and there comes a point where they want me to move into director level and I then explain I don’t want it for the reasons I’ve said above, how would this go down? Would I perceived as lacking ambition? Would a company potentially lose interest in me if they see me as just wanting to come in and be comfortable?
To those at a senior level - what are your thoughts on this? Have you come across this often?? Would love to hear from those with experience in this, and also from anyone who might be doing this exact thing!
Thanks!
