24M - Ruined my lips from years of chronic licking. How do I fix the darkening and dryness?

Hey guys, need some help fixing my lips. I’ve had a bad habit of licking my lips whenever they get dry or chapped since I was a teenager. Because I left it untreated for years, it's caused the skin on my lips to turn dark/hyperpigmented.

I want to note that my lips aren't genetically dark or big like this: the darkness and fullness have completely developed over the years from the chronic habit.

I started taking care of them a couple of months ago. I’ve been using an SPF 50 lip balm with Niacinamide and Kojic Acid everytime they turn dry or just technically all day long. but I'm not seeing any real improvement in the colour or texture. In the past, plain Vaseline and Boroline didn't really do the trick for me (or maybe i didn’t apply it enough because my lips were always dry)

I just picked up a tube of Carmex from Boots, but I'm worried it might actually make the irritation and darkening worse?

Has anyone successfully dealt with this? What products actually work to stop the dryness and repair the skin barrier? Cheers.
