Should I move back to Mumbai from Canada ? If Yes, then When

I am 30 year old married with a PR and a corpus of 1.3 crore. My wife is currently in Mumbai with stable job and in process of getting PR. I want to move back to live with parents and enjoy the warmth of extended family. But the issue is that my parents in Mumbai have 1 bhk apartment. So here are few options I am considering, assuming when I move back, I get close to 30LPA :

  1. Move now: We will need to rent a 2 bhk and with rent received from 1 bhk, we can keep saving until we can buy a 2bhk apartment but then we won’t have savings for kids in future
  2. Move in April 2027 ( coming back after applying citizenship ): same as option 1 but net corpus might increase to 1.7 crore
  3. Move after 2 years: Slightly more corpus but hassle of wife switching country twice and career impact. While also probability of differing opinions on returning back
  4. Move after 5 years: much more corpus but same issue of career re-stabilization and difference in opinion of returning back.

I am just exhausted thinking about it and really tired. Would appreciate clear perspectives

Should I move back to India from Canada

I am a 30M Indian currently living in Canada on PR. I recently got married, and my wife, 28F, is currently living and working in Mumbai.

We are trying to decide whether I should move back to India soon or stay in Canada, wait for her to come here with PR in 6 months, and stay for another 3–5 years to save more before returning.

Current situation:

  • Current net worth/investments: around ₹1.2–1.3 crore
  • Expected corpus by potential move-back date: around ₹1.4–1.5 crore
  • Wife’s current income in Mumbai: around ₹1 lakh/month in hand
  • My expected India salary range: hopefully ₹25–35 LPA, but not guaranteed
  • No existing EMI
  • We own a 1 BHK in Mumbai, which we may rent out if I move back
  • If I return, four of us would likely stay together in a rented 2 BHK, with rent around ₹35k/month ( other 30K/month will be paid by rent we get from 1BHK)
  • Expected Mumbai household expenses: around ₹1.3–1.6 lakh/month, depending on lifestyle and rent offset
  • No kids currently, and not planning kids for the next 4–5 years

Canada is financially attractive because my earning potential is higher here. If my wife also moves here and starts working, our savings over the next few years could be much higher.

But emotionally and socially, India feels more natural. Most of my family is in India, my wife already has her family and friend circle in Mumbai. Long term, we may also prefer raising kids closer to family and Indian culture.

My main fear is whether moving back now would be financially premature. I keep seeing people say that one needs ₹5 crore or more to live decently in India, even in Tier 2 cities. I understand that may be true for FIRE or retirement, but is that really needed for a working couple in their early 30s?

My questions:

  1. Is ₹1.4–1.5 crore a reasonable financial base for a working couple moving back to India?
  2. If our combined income in Mumbai becomes around ₹2.5–3 lakh/month, with low/no EMI and some rental income from our 1 BHK, would that be comfortable or still risky?
  3. Is ₹5 crore actually needed to live decently, or is that more of a retirement/FIRE number?
  4. Would it be smarter to stay in Canada for 3–5 more years and build the corpus closer to ₹2.5–3 crore before moving back?
  5. For people who moved back from abroad to India, what costs or lifestyle shocks did you underestimate?

Looking for practical advice, especially from people who have moved back to India or are living in Mumbai with similar income/expense levels.
