Reporter

Some of you may remember me as the guy who tossed his keys down and quit a week or so ago. That particular post had many, many upvotes and replies.

But that’s not why I’m here, in what will probably be my last post. I’ve wasted all the time I care to on this insipid company.

The reason I’m here now is to tell you that there is currently a reporter attempting to cover DG in an honest, impactful way. My understanding is that she has been met with some skepticism, with my favorite conspiracy being that’s she’s actually corporate stalking the Reddit boards.

So let me explain something. I have met her in-person. I’ve read some of her articles and book exerts (not the books in there entirely I admit).

She is, I assure you, legit. She is not an Undercover Boss, nor is she a corporate plant of some sort. A theory which was ridiculous on its face.

If you’d like to remain anonymous she will do that. Statistics tell me that by the time this is published the majority of you wont work there anyway.

If you’d want your story told, if you want to tell people how soul-crushing it is to work there, this is your chance. Nothing bad will befall you for speaking. If she does approach you I highly recommend talking to her. Anonymous is your choice. I chose not to be. Because frankly, I don’t care a whit. I never intend to set foot in one of these places anyway. But if job security is your concern. She will protect your anonymity. Please speak with her.

Had enough

I just finished a stint working at Dollar General as a store manager and I figured may as well share some thoughts on the company on the way out.

Firstly, this was quite easily the worst job I’ve had. The expectations are entirely unrealistic for the labor model they have. I’d like to say the company is unaware that their policies are resulting in managers having to work excess hours and to endure way more stress than a freaking dollar store ever should cause. But they’re aware. The model they’re using is the plan. They treat us like tires, drive us as long and fast as they can and when there’s no tread left, in the trash we go. And they know it, there’s no way they don’t. The turnover at this dump is widely known and definitely excessive. In my less than a years time here I’ve seen half a dozen managers go-none with a two weeks notice and a normal separation. Everyone was a walkout or a firing. Every single one. But they don’t care, pop a new tire on and keep printing money. The turnover isn’t a bug, it’s a feature.

I had to laugh during the stupid CBL training modules because at one point it said “Never use a mop sink to wash your hands” and the video had a mop sink with a red X over it. A filthy old mop sink was all we had. It was either wash your hands in it or don’t wash them. Our break room was a rickety old folding table in the store room. It was constantly buried by rolltainers. You couldn’t use it if you wanted to.

Then the fact they are too cheap to use Brinks or a reliable bank pickup service. I was literally alone, the only person on the building, for 4 days. No chance to leave and I was open to close those days. We had no other staff. And they yelled at me for late deposits. Newsflash guys, I dropped them at night. Was I supposed to? No. But I had little choice.

We pay just barely enough to attract bottom tier talent. And then when the idiots they force us to hire do idiot things, were to blame.

We eat a steady stream of crap all day from barely literate customers, deal with endless callouts and half the time they actually show up they steal. It’s an endless parade of useless deadbeats in and out as employees.

When I wasn’t running register I was supposed to have truck done in a day, do the ridiculous CCTV thing, review a slew of totally normal voids on Page 2, keep Tram up, constantly hire, face the entire store every single day, set seasonal, and on and on.

If I could sum up this living Hell it would be this: They will hand you a fistful of toothpicks and ask you to build a yacht from them. And endless string of impossible to compete tasks if you don’t cut corners. They know it can’t be done in the hours we’re supposed to work. They count on us to work ourselves to death to save them a buck here and there. Again, that’s simply the plan. It’s intentional.

The constant barrage of text messages all day every day from both staff and the DM. A seemingly endless lists of “critical has to be done right now” tasks that come down from ln high multiple times a month. A backroom the size of a shoebox but for some reason they have no problem sending 1,100 pieces into the store on truck.

In addition the DM and loss prevention seem to be operating from the assumption you’re always guilty of something and must prove yourself innocent. I’ve been told about things that will result in a write up, sorry, AcCoUntAbILity, since the second I started. Threats and browbeating were just endless.

I’ve never walked off a job before. Never. Not once. Until this. There’s a certain amount of shit I’m willing to eat and this exceeded that amount by several tons. Starting with the fact nobody told me in the interview the expectation was 6 days a week. Absurd. And when you’re not there, you’re on call. Constantly.

And so I say goodbye Dollar General. I will not miss you and I never should taken the job in the first place.
