My cat sits away from me and has started to paw the air, now that’s escalated into doing a little dance. Does she just want attention?

I’ve had my cat a few years now. She started very distance but over time has gotten much closer and now loves attention. Most of the time she'll sit on my lap and be fussed.
However she's started doing this thing where she’ll sit far away from me and paw at the air, sometimes lightly meowing. She’s now started getting on her hind legs to do it which looks like a little dance.
It’s very cute! She normally gets a positive reaction from me when she does it. I presumed she’s doing it for attention and she wants a fuss, but I don’t know why she wouldn’t just come closer? If I then approach her to stroke her it’s almost like she then doesn’t know how to react now she’s finally got my attention. I can approach her or pick her up, stroke her for a bit, but then she'll walk away and start the whole thing again.
Is this just a little game for her or do you think she’s wanting something else?
