Long night ride tomorrow. What am I forgetting?

Lights charged, route downloaded, extra layer packed.

Got the usual repair stuff, food and water too.

Somehow I still always feel like I’m forgetting something before a long ride in the dark lol.

What’s the one thing you never leave home without on a night ride?

Night rides hit different with the right light setup

Took this photo during an evening ride. There’s something special about riding after dark — quiet roads, less traffic, and just enough light to focus on the path ahead.

I used to think more lumens were everything, but beam shape and how the light covers the road can make a bigger difference.

A good bike light is not just about being bright — it’s about riding with confidence.

Sharing this as part of the r/bikelights 30-Day Night Ride Community Challenge. Looking forward to seeing more night riding setups and experiences from the community.

Charging mobile phone using the battery of a rechargeable bike light?

Most rechargeable bike light are charged via USB port. I wonder if is it possible to use them as a power bank for your mobile phone as well? Or only a subset of them can be use as a mobile phone charger?

Cycling in the heat around Phoenix (~40°C days), what am I still missing?

Sunglasses are mandatory here—sun feels like it’s bouncing off everything.

I go with thin, loose long sleeves instead of heavy sunscreen layers. Still use sunscreen on exposed skin, but I try not to rely on it for long rides.

Early morning is basically the only comfortable window. After 9–10am, the heat ramps up fast and shade becomes rare.

Route planning matters a lot. I’ll pick roads with more tree cover or neighborhood cuts, even if it’s slightly longer, just to avoid long exposed stretches.

When I stop, I don’t stop in the sun—ever. Shade is non-negotiable, even if it means rolling a bit farther.

Water strategy is simple: cold water + ice in the bottle at the start. Sometimes I freeze half the bottle overnight.

On really hot days, I avoid repeated hard efforts. Steady pace feels better than surges that spike body heat.

Still figuring out if I should be adding electrolytes every ride or only on longer sessions over 90 minutes.

Why do bike lights still feel overcomplicated in 2026?

My old front light finally died after a drop. It had a few good years of night riding, so fair enough—but what stood out was how quickly it became non-recoverable and non-serviceable. A sealed shell, basic lithium cell inside, and once something went wrong, that was it.

It got me thinking: why are bike lights still designed like disposable gadgets?

What I wish was standard now:

  • Proper aluminum body that actually manages heat
  • USB-C charging that works while in use, or proper external power support
  • Real “street vs off-road” beam switch instead of just dimming
  • Universal mounts instead of proprietary ones everywhere
  • Replaceable battery
  • External battery packs that feel like part of the system, not an afterthought

Feels like we’ve had the tech for years, but not the execution.

Do you ever make you route longer?

Been loving the commute recently, as I’m building fitness. I don’t get all that much time to exercise so considering taking a detour to get more time on the bike.

Anyone else do/want to do this?
