I paid to visit a farm sanctuary and the best part was a pig completely ignoring me
Visited a farm animal sanctuary last weekend. There was this huge pig lying under a tree, apparently having the best afternoon of her life.
Most of the other pigs came over to investigate us. One kept trying to untie someone's shoelaces. But this particular girl looked up once, decided we weren't interesting, and went back to sleep.
A couple of visitors were disappointed because they'd specifically wanted to meet her. Apparently she's one of the older residents and pretty popular in the sanctuary's photos.
The volunteer explained that she wasn't particularly interested in people that day and we should leave her alone.
Someone asked if treats would convince her to come over.
The volunteer just said, "We don't make them interact with visitors."
And I don't know why, but that was my favorite part of the entire visit.
That pig didn't have to be friendly, entertaining, grateful for being rescued, or even acknowledge our existence. She could just lie under a tree because she felt like it.
I think we sometimes focus so much on proving how intelligent, affectionate and entertaining farm animals are that we forget something pretty fundamental.
They shouldn't have to impress us to deserve a decent life.
Anyway, I spent twenty minutes watching a pig sleep. Ten out of ten experience.
