Thing I Hate As A Cashier

I've been at Michaels for about 10 months now, and I've grown fatigued with the job. It actually makes me miss working as one at Joann Fabrics. That said, for all the cashiers who can relate, here's a list of things I hate as a cashier.

  1. Rude and Entitled Customers

Now I'm a nice person who tries to hold as much patience as I can, but even I have my limits. Act like a jerk in front of me and try to twist my arm for a discount you're not exactly gonna be looked back upon fondly. And the ones who only come out during Xmas are the absolute WORST!

I've had my fair share of rude customers at Joanns, but most of them who I've ran into at least were decent....Michaels on the other hand....

  1. "I scanned this one too many times."

One minute you're ringing up someone on the register, and someone at SCO calls you and says they scanned their yarn one too many times. Couple times, it's all good, but doing so 5-6 times in a shift, it gets annoying. Me, personally, I'm indifferent as the SCO IS rather sensitive. Speaking of the self checkout...

  1. Gen X'ers and Boomers

What's with those generations being SOOO against self checkout, because they "hate technology" or would "rather have a person check me out"? Weren't boomers in their 30s when the Atari came out in 1977? And no, self checkouts AREN'T taking jobs, otherwise wouldn't half of Walmart would be out of a job, same with over 95% of cashiers across McDonald's.

  1. NOT paying attention whatsoever.

You wouldn't believe the amount of people I've had hand me their stuff to ring up while I'm directly standing behind an SCO, drinking water or handling a BOPIS, and yet they don't notice the white touchscreen machine IN FRONT OF THEM! Then they respond "Oh, IDK that was there!" or some boomer would be like, "Been awhile since I've been here."

And don't get me started on the ones trying to pay cash when the red sign reads "Credit/Debit Only"!

  1. Signups

Why is corporate on our case when it comes to signups, and certain managers wanting to be #1 in the district on signups? It's not like we're getting a raise. And the way we're supposed to get them feels manipulative and borderline forced, and I guess we're supposed to get people signed up at SCO. Last I checked, isn't self checkout supposed to be for people who wanna get in and out, and NOT wanna deal with people?

Before you managers comment the typical script on ask customers this and that, just know when hours are severely cut to hell and all the other nonsense corporate's doing, why would anyone wanna put in the effort? And who goes to Michaels for a credit card?

  1. DoorDashers

This might vary among some of you, but the DoorDashers in my area would approach us and shove their phone in our face asking where something's at, and expect US to go get it for them. Also, it doesn't help when most of them (where I live at least) are Hispanic, Haitian, or of African descent and can BARELY speak English.

And this is my list of things I hate as a cashier at Michaels. Is there anything I missed? LMK what you think!

One Day

OK, so unless things are going to be rather slow next weekend because Memorial Day and the Indy 500, why is it I'm only working ONE DAY the week of May 24th?!

Of course I asked my manager and she said things are "slow" the week of Memorial Day and people will be off. OK, Friday through Monday I get, but you're telling me people will be off on the 27th?! And bills come in days later on June 1st?

I've been hit with mostly working 2 days since February, and every now and then 3, MAYBE 4 days if I'm lucky. This is why I wanna quit Michaels. Working for $11 an hour to work as a cashier and blow up balloons and BOPIS and all ain't worth it. And then we get punished for not getting enough signups, because it's 10AM Monday morning and hardly anyone's coming in?!

Has anyone been seeing similar hours on their schedule, or do you guys think my manager doesn't exactly like me that much?

When Are Hours Going 2 Get Better

For all the Michaels employees who've been with the company for a number of years, does anyone know when the hours will get better, or at least pick up? What are hours like in the summer?

Because since after Xmas, things have taken a dent in my paycheck. Since early February I've been working mostly 2 days a week, 3 if I'm lucky. Except each time I ask when hours will pick up it's always "we don't know" with management....doesn't help with being a cashier, hours are based on the number of signups you get, and my manager hired two people, despite, again, NOT knowing when hours will pick back up. And it's May now.

Even when working at Joanns, after the holidays, yeah, things WERE slow, but not to the point where I'm coming home with less than $200 on payday. Though I DID do cashier work in addition to working truck. Here, I'm the sole cashier at Michaels and I keep getting screwed over. Fortunately I have a job interview at a local mall in a few days (wish me luck BTW), so here's hoping I can leave Michaels sooner than later.

LMK what y'all think and if anyone else is considering on leaving for this exact reason, feel free to share your thoughts.
