I am SO sick of this company glorifying alcoholism [Vent!]

As someone who has been struggling with substance abuse since age 15, this stuff makes me really sad. All the “wine mom” merch usually bugs me, but this specifically is so gross to me.

I’m venting here, I know it’s just a dumb, useless, silly little sweater for a bottle. But I am sure I am not the only one who has drank before/during a cashier shift. (I know this is VERY risky/stupid/fireable, I’m mostly sober these days, and it has been years since I’ve done this, woohoo.)

I’m SO much better these days, but the *only* time I’ve missed work since coming back from leave (mental health/substance abuse treatment 😬) was because I was hungover… from stress-induced binge drinking.

I am so fucking tired of this stupid job making me relapse. I’ve been having a really good run recently though! Every day I survive without unhealthy coping mechanisms is a win. I won’t let this damn company have such a hold on my emotions.

Anyways, thanks for reading. Feel free to reach out if you’re struggling with mental health or substance abuse, I’m always happy to listen and give advice if needed!!

Did I miss something?

Why are they adding an “I” button & paint button under the artwork design in DH? Was there any communication on what that will be for? The communication from corporate about framing has really been abysmal since last year. Feel like info it’s getting released to us in awkward chunks with no explanation or context leading me to think I’ve missed some important info somewhere.

One of my Coworkers damaged my customers art and I worry I’ll be left to deal with it

Sorry for long post but I need to vent and possibly get advice.
I took this order for a first time customer a few weeks ago. He had nearly a dozen individually signed and numbered prints from different well known artists and spent well over two thousand dollars on this order. He was very hesitant about leaving his art here and I told him he was welcome to retain the art but assured him that we were all trained to handle art, (because in my shop we actually are trained very well by the manager) he eventually opted to leave the art with us and the last thing he said as he was leaving is “I trust you guys”. Cut to three weeks later and my coworker is putting hardware in the frames of one of the pieces, drill wobbles, and she ends up jamming the drill through the foamcore, into the art, and hitting the acrylic. Gigantic hole in the artwork.
This happened on my day off and I only learned about it the next day. The pieces were due today and as far as I know he has not come to pick anything up yet. My manager has called him twice but says that nobody is answering and there’s no voicemail option so he doesn’t even know one of his pieces is destroyed. Manager doesn’t work again until Saturday and I’m pretty much working all through the next two days. It’s likely I’ll be the one having to deal with the customer when he comes in, and I just don’t think that’s fair. I’m feeling pretty resentful of my coworker right now. I feel like she or my manager should be the ones to face the customer, because I had nothing to do with this damage. I’m considering taking the next two days off just to avoid dealing with the mess, which I know is kind of cowardly but I just don’t get paid enough to deal with rightfully pissed off customers when it is just not my fault. Does anyone have advice for what they would do in my situation?

TLDR: coworker put a hole through a hesitant new customers signed and numbered artwork. Manager couldn’t get ahold of the guy, so now it looks like I’ll be the one dealing with the fallout. wwyd?

Missed 15 breaks?

hi I’ve been a ft CEM manager for Michael’s for like 2 years now. I never have my second break covered because there’s no other manager here at that time. im required to have my radio on, I can’t leave the store usually I’m able to sit but I still answer calls if I need to, and questions over the radio. I was told to just start my break over again if I get interrupted but I’d be taking a break all night if I did that lol

a friend of mine just told me that in California that counts as missing my break and I’m entitled to an extra pay, is that true does anyone know?

Corporate freaking out about framing all of a sudden…?

I dunno if this is just in my district or what, but corporate is really cracking down on everything relating to custom framing/the frame shop.

First, we had to get rid of our Phillips head screwdrivers, small super hangers, and small D-rings. Then we had to do some very-extensive White Glove training that I haven’t seen in all four years of being a framer. Now they want us to get rid of our filing cabinet (?).

Just curious if anyone else is going through this and/or the reasoning behind all these sudden changes.

Absolutely Drowning

Rant: Anyone else in an A Volume Frame Shop with their staff getting bare bones hours, and you're constantly doing damage control, and playing catch up to be on time?

The quality of our materials are lower, and it takes longer to do simple tasks because of it, plus there's no time to do anything well. Customers are starting to get pissed, and were just constantly doing re-dos on top of all of the other orders, or things get miscommunicated and then I end up spending my time doing things like on-the-spot wire hanging, or adding art info upon pick-up. Every shift I'm alone, over my head in production, and Customers. Today was especially a lot, there were so many dissatisfied Customers... but at least they weren't yelling. I'm pretty sure a guy tried to sus out our 10 min Framing Printer to steal it, I went to talk to him and he was aggressive... If he comes back maybe I should let him go for it because I'm not getting paid to be Security too. I really do like Framing, the people that I work with, and some Customers, but some extra staff support would go a looonnnggg way.

Cut Bar

Any tips on cutting multiple yards of fabric for these absolute cunts that call themselves previous Joann customers? I swear to god if one more 60-80 year old hag huffs and puffs while I’m trying to cut 9 yards on this piece of shit, I’m going to go fucking postal.

Finally leaving!!! Surprised by my mixed feelings...

I have complained MANY times on this sub about how frustrated I am with corporate and how much I'll look forward to quitting. After hundreds of job applications, I was finally offered a job in the field that I'm trying to pursue for my long-term career, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be facing the exciting path ahead! I'm feeling especially grateful in the wake of all the changes that are coming out for framing — I don't want to have to deal with the customization stuff and the "sTrEaMLiNiNg" of other important processes.

But as much as I've been actively looking forward to the day that I get to quit, I'm feeling surprisingly anxious about actually doing it. I'm submitting more than 2 weeks' notice because I'm the FM and I think that position warrants giving extra time, but I'm feeling oddly guilty about abandoning my framing team. They're all lovely people, and none of them are in a place where they can step up into FM. Including me, the total number of people regularly scheduled in the shop is 4 (2 framers, 1 cross-trained TM, and me, plus the CEM who subs in sometimes), and I'm really worried about leaving them in a bad spot. I'm hoping that in my last few weeks, I can maybe try to start cross-training someone so there can at least be someone at the counter?

I'm also worried about how this will reflect on store management. There have been a few resignations lately, and the excellent management (and my awesome team) is the only reason I've stuck around this long. (God knows it wasn't the pay, benefits, or company itself.) Is there a way to communicate to corporate that my resignation is entirely due to my own career prospects and has nothing to do with the management?

I'm honestly really surprised by how much I'm actually struggling with tendering my resignation, despite how thrilled I am to pursue this new position. Has anyone else felt the same way?

(edit: missed a word)

Keep getting vouchers

I’m and ex employee and haven’t shopped at any of the locations near me since I quit years ago. Every once in a while I’ll get an email saying I have a voucher. Is there anyway to look at like receipts that are linked to my account or is Michael’s not there yet? The only other person that might be using it is my sister but I think she has her own rewards now (she fell for the credit card discount and I’m so disappointed in her lol)

Not getting scheduled anymore?

Does anybody else have issues with scheduling? I’ve been working at Michaels for close to 10 years now and they’ve rarely given me more than eight hours a week, if that. The other day they randomly stopped putting me on the schedule and the hours that they did finally give me quickly disappeared.
What should I do? I’m trying to get up the courage to phone them but I’m not a very confrontational person and I’m worried about getting overly emotional during the call. Not working for the foreseeable future is going to mess with my ability to pay bills and I feel physically sick to my stomach.
Is there a reason they wouldn’t be scheduling me? Has this happened to anyone else?

Michaels Pride Tshirt

so I was helping out at another store and one of their managers had a really cool michaels tshirt, it was black with like a rainbow paint splatter on it and said "michaels pride" on it, and I was wondering, is there a way I can get one for myself?

Thing I Hate As A Cashier

I've been at Michaels for about 10 months now, and I've grown fatigued with the job. It actually makes me miss working as one at Joann Fabrics. That said, for all the cashiers who can relate, here's a list of things I hate as a cashier.

  1. Rude and Entitled Customers

Now I'm a nice person who tries to hold as much patience as I can, but even I have my limits. Act like a jerk in front of me and try to twist my arm for a discount you're not exactly gonna be looked back upon fondly. And the ones who only come out during Xmas are the absolute WORST!

I've had my fair share of rude customers at Joanns, but most of them who I've ran into at least were decent....Michaels on the other hand....

  1. "I scanned this one too many times."

One minute you're ringing up someone on the register, and someone at SCO calls you and says they scanned their yarn one too many times. Couple times, it's all good, but doing so 5-6 times in a shift, it gets annoying. Me, personally, I'm indifferent as the SCO IS rather sensitive. Speaking of the self checkout...

  1. Gen X'ers and Boomers

What's with those generations being SOOO against self checkout, because they "hate technology" or would "rather have a person check me out"? Weren't boomers in their 30s when the Atari came out in 1977? And no, self checkouts AREN'T taking jobs, otherwise wouldn't half of Walmart would be out of a job, same with over 95% of cashiers across McDonald's.

  1. NOT paying attention whatsoever.

You wouldn't believe the amount of people I've had hand me their stuff to ring up while I'm directly standing behind an SCO, drinking water or handling a BOPIS, and yet they don't notice the white touchscreen machine IN FRONT OF THEM! Then they respond "Oh, IDK that was there!" or some boomer would be like, "Been awhile since I've been here."

And don't get me started on the ones trying to pay cash when the red sign reads "Credit/Debit Only"!

  1. Signups

Why is corporate on our case when it comes to signups, and certain managers wanting to be #1 in the district on signups? It's not like we're getting a raise. And the way we're supposed to get them feels manipulative and borderline forced, and I guess we're supposed to get people signed up at SCO. Last I checked, isn't self checkout supposed to be for people who wanna get in and out, and NOT wanna deal with people?

Before you managers comment the typical script on ask customers this and that, just know when hours are severely cut to hell and all the other nonsense corporate's doing, why would anyone wanna put in the effort? And who goes to Michaels for a credit card?

  1. DoorDashers

This might vary among some of you, but the DoorDashers in my area would approach us and shove their phone in our face asking where something's at, and expect US to go get it for them. Also, it doesn't help when most of them (where I live at least) are Hispanic, Haitian, or of African descent and can BARELY speak English.

And this is my list of things I hate as a cashier at Michaels. Is there anything I missed? LMK what you think!

New Employee

I’ve recently started within the last week, not only has all of the things i have to do at minimum wage (in my state we’re still stuck at minimum wage from 2010) take me off guard.. but we only get one break (30 mins) within the 8 to 9 hours we’re scheduled.. i’ve worked retail since i was 15 plus a few other jobs but this is the first one where the work load is crazy insane and the breaks are at the minimum allowed. do all michael’s work with one break?
