Outlast 3 isn't Red Barrels' next game
I came across this Q&A on YouTube. Philippe Morin confirmed that a small part of the team is working on an unannounced new game title. He also said they don't want Red Barrels to be known only for horror. So their next game probably won't be Outlast or even a horror game.
Host: Is Outlast 3 in development, or do you plan a complete pivot to make entirely different genres of games?
----
Philippe Morin: We’ve shifted to a dual parallel project pipeline for the first time. Our majority team continues building seasonal content for The Outlast Trials, while a small core group works on pre-production and concept development for a fully unannounced new title. I won’t share any extra details on that unannounced project, so we’ll keep the suspense alive for now.
After wrapping Outlast 2, we were completely burnt out and fully planned to pivot to something entirely unrelated. The two original single-player games were a grueling marathon. But after a few months of rest and creative reset, we landed on the concept for The Outlast Trials. It lets us deepen the Outlast IP while challenging us with the brand-new multiplayer format.
As for the next unannounced game we’re drafting, we refuse to box our studio in as a “horror-only developer.” The beauty of being independent is that we’re not obligated to lock ourselves into rigid five or ten-year corporate roadmaps — we have complete creative flexibility.
