What am I doing wrong?! I just want to thread a 1/4” rod…

1/4” rod, brand new 1/4”-20 die. What the heck??

Is there a rule of thumb for tightening engine components? (eg. water pump, timing chain cover)

I'm doing a water pump replacement on a ford 3.5L V6 but I don't have any fancy torque wrench that lets me dial in the manufacturer recommended torque. Can I just go "real snug but not crazy" like I normally would on a bolt? If I ABSOLUTELY have to buy a special tool, can you provide a recommendation? I don't do much car work so I'm not too excited about buying a tool I will rarely use.
