Do steel toes wear faster than soft?

Bought this pair of Redwing supersole 2.0s about 6 years ago. the leather on the steel toes wore through within the first year, which disppointed me. Before this pair, I’d worn out (cobbler said they could no longer resole) 2 pairs of Thorogood soft toes and I never had that much wear there. In addition to the place where they wore through, they also just look more chewed up than the soft toe Thorogoods.

My question is whether the added structure/rigidity of the steel toes makes the leather that covers it wear faster than if it was unsupported?

In my trade, I work on doors, and often hold them open with my right foot. The bottoms of commercial glass-aluminum storefront doors are often sharp, and I suspect that’s what caused the cuts on my redwings. Why didn’t they also cut up the thorogoods? Is it because of the lower height of the soft toe?
