(USA, TX) Chances of acceptance into a Clinical Psychology PhD (Neuropsych focus – adult + pediatric populations)

Hi everyone,

I’m currently trying to evaluate how competitive I am for Clinical Psychology PhD programs, specifically programs with strengths in neuropsychology/neuroinflammation, pediatric neuropsychology, chronic illness populations, and translational clinical research. I would really appreciate honest feedback on my trajectory, what gaps I still need to fill, and what I should focus on over the next 1–2 years.

Academic Background

I completed my undergraduate degree in psychology and am currently completing my master’s degree while working full-time in clinical research.

Academically, my path has not been perfectly linear. During undergrad, I had periods where I struggled balancing personal circumstances, academics, and figuring out my long-term direction. My grades early on were not reflective of my actual interests or capabilities. However, once I became involved in research and clinical neuropsychology-related work, my trajectory changed significantly.

Graduate school has been much stronger academically and professionally, and I’ve become much more focused on pursuing pediatric neuropsychology and clinical research translation.

Current Role

I currently work as a Research Coordinator in Pediatric Rheumatology at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital.

A large portion of my work involves autoimmune and inflammatory brain disorders, chronic illness populations, mental health screening, and multidisciplinary collaboration between rheumatology and neurology teams.

Some of my responsibilities include:

Coordinating clinical research studies and registries

Participant recruitment and retention

Regulatory work / IRB submissions

Data collection and management

Cross-disciplinary collaboration between physicians, coordinators, and researchers

Organizing international case conferences involving physicians and specialists from multiple countries

Working on projects involving depression screening and psychosocial outcomes in pediatric chronic illness populations

Research Interests

My long-term interests include:

Pediatric neuropsychology

Neuroinflammation and autoimmune brain disorders

FIRES/NORSE and autoimmune encephalitis

Mental health outcomes in pediatric chronic illness populations

Translational research connecting clinical care with neuropsychological outcomes

Cultural and psychosocial factors in pediatric populations

Research Experience / Publications

Current experiences include:

Research coordination for multiple pediatric rheumatology studies and registries

International collaboration through FIRES/NORSE conferences and neuroinflammatory disease discussions

Work involving PHQ-9/depression screening in pediatric lupus and chronic illness populations

Scientific writing experience and manuscript collaboration

Contributing to conference organization and CME-accredited educational programming

Experience presenting/coordinating multidisciplinary medical discussions

I also recently completed a chapter that is being submitted to Seminars in Neurology, which has been a major milestone for me in terms of scientific writing and collaborative academic work. That one is in review. I am also working on a first author manuscript. I have 1 co author manuscript and a co-author abstract.

Main Questions

Based on this background, how competitive do I sound for Clinical Psychology PhD programs?

What are the biggest weaknesses/gaps in my application?

Would my research experience compensate for a less-than-perfect undergraduate academic history?

How important is direct neuropsych testing experience before applying?

What should I prioritize most over the next year?

Would pursuing additional publications or neuropsych assessment experience make the biggest difference?

I would especially appreciate advice from current Clinical Psychology PhD students, faculty, or people pursuing neuropsychology tracks.

Thank you!
