My daughter is almost 12 and competes in dance at an intermediate level (local competitions). She currently dances about 10 hours/week in split between various styles. She started dance “late” (age 8) due to the pandemic, so this is her second season competing. She has never taken a gymnastics or acro class.

She came to me because she feels some of her friends are able to do more tumbling and add that to their routines, and she can barely cartwheel. We talked about since her dance schedule can cut way back during the summer, maybe taking some private gymnastics lessons would be a good way to maintain strength and flexibility, and gain confidence in her cartwheel, without getting burned out on dance. There always seems to be drama surrounding Acro at the dance studio so would go outside her studio into a dedicated gymnastics space.

I think she thinks she’s going to take a few lessons and walk into fall doing an aerial and I’m not sure that’s realistic.

What’s a good reasonable expectation for a kid that’s in shape, teachable, and motivated but has no gymnastics experience? I could probably swing doing private lessons twice a week.
