Passed the SIE
I recently passed the SIE on my first try and wanted to share what worked for me in case it helps anyone else preparing.
I used Knopman Marks, which my future employer provided. My prep timeline was about 2.5 weeks. My test date was May 14, and I started on April 27 by getting through Chapters 1–3. After that, I studied around 1–2 hours per day on weekdays, usually doing one chapter per day. If a chapter felt easier or shorter, I would do another one if I had the bandwidth.
For each chapter, I did all of the pop quizzes, progress checks, and unit exams, then followed up with a custom quiz on that same chapter through Knopman’s website. Most of my custom quizzes were around 15–20 questions. If I noticed I was weaker in a certain area, I would go back and do more practice questions for that chapter until I felt more comfortable.
Knopman also had a key concepts and review charts booklet, which I found really helpful. It made it easy to quickly refer back to the main ideas from specific chapters without having to reread everything in detail. I used it more as a high-level review tool, especially closer to the exam.
I finished all of the chapters by May 8. After that, I focused on practice exams:
May 11: Diagnostic Exam 1 — 91%
May 12: Diagnostic Exam 2 — 89%
May 13: FINRA Practice Exam — 88%
May 14: Actual SIE
One thing that helped me a lot was using ChatGPT to review practice questions I got wrong. I would submit a screenshot of the question and ask it to explain why the correct answer was right and why the other answer choices were wrong. That made a big difference because I was not just memorizing answers. I was actually learning from my mistakes, seeing the patterns, and connecting concepts across chapters.
Come test day, I personally felt like the actual exam was easier than the Knopman practice exams, which I liked because Knopman made me feel very prepared. Naturally, I am a very nervous test taker, and that did not change on exam day. Even though I felt prepared, I was still anxious. I ended up finishing the exam with about 37 minutes to spare. I took a 5-minute break, then came back and reviewed the first 5 questions, which I heard as a tip in a Capadvantagetutoring video, along with the questions I had marked for review. Didn't submit till all the time was used up, but that was just a personal choice.
My biggest advice would be to focus heavily on practice questions and review every mistake carefully. The explanations matter more than just the score. If you consistently understand why you are missing questions, you will start to see the same concepts repeat in different ways.
