The Tonalli is the warmth carried within: the breath of fate, character, luck, and life-force given with one’s day of birth. It is the bright mark by which a person walks through the world, its presence as clear as the sun.

The Nagual is the shadow thrown by that light: the hidden double, beastlike, moving beside or within the person. It is not merely a companion or familiar, but the other face of the self: instinct, omen, disguise, and the true nature kept hidden.

Where the Tonalli burns openly, the Nagual watches from the dark.
