Dial M for Murder Blackmail Scene
Lifelong Hitchcock fan here…
Rewatching one my top ten, Dial M for Murder, and I have to say that the blackmail scene is probably one of my favourite Hitchcock scenes of all time.
It lasts nearly 25 minutes but never once drags. From the moment we see Tony practicing with the cane to when Swann picks up the money, it’s some of the finest acting and dialogue you can find in a Hitchcock film.
I love how as we slowly realize, through Tony’s speech, that Swann is a scumbag predator, you can see Swann slowly realizing that Tony is a much bigger, and far more intelligent, predator himself. The way he lures Swann in is diabolical. Arguably one of the most cunning villains in film from that time period. Hats off to both Ray Milland and Anthony Dawson.
Also, Hitchcock’s cameo in this scene?
*Chef’s kiss
My second favourite Hitchcock film, best viewed during the later stages of autumn, on a cold but sunny Sunday afternoon.
Psycho will always be #1, but The Trouble with Harry somehow holds a deeper place in my heart.
Weekends at my house are lit af:
Every weekend, I (43M) watch a single episode from various shows, thereby recreating the beloved “Saturday morning cartoon effect” from my childhood.
I try to watch at least 30 episodes per weekend, and I keep track of it all in a scribbler. Today so far has been Rocket Robin Hood, MOTU, and Here Comes the Grump.
This has been going on for nearly two years, and the collection (which is displayed chronologically) continues to grow.
Good times ❤️
