Confrontation - The Island Exam of Year 3

The crunch of dry leaves under boots was the only sound competing with the incessant buzzing of cicadas. The afternoon sun filtered through the thick jungle canopy, transforming the air into a dense, suffocating steam that burned the lungs with every breath.

For the third-years, the uninhabited island exam wasn't new; the familiarity with the relentless terrain and the wear and tear wasn't new to the ANHS students. But even so, their experience in this type of environment and exam didn't make it any easier. The island was no longer a stage for rustic survival; it was a slaughterhouse. The rules had been stripped of any past kindness. Here, in this forgotten corner of the island, the packed dirt and twisted roots were about to decide the fate of two students carrying the weight of their respective classes on their shoulders.

Suzune Horikita let out a breath of hot air, wiping the sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand, leaving a streak of grayish mud across her skin. She wore the school's crimson tracksuit, torn at the knees and splattered with dark stains. Standing barely three meters ahead of her, Honami Ichinose stumbled.

The leader of the Class D looked deplorable. Her uniform was drenched in sweat and caked in damp dirt. Her pink hair, normally silky and neat, hung in tangled strands over her shoulders. But what was most alarming wasn't her physical state, but her eyes. Those blue pupils, which had once overflowed with kindness and optimism, now reflected a wild desperation—the look of a cornered animal staring down a precipice.

Between them, half-buried in the mud, lay a small black rectangular device: the zone's bonus token container. Whoever scanned it first with their writstwatch would secure the points needed to save their group from disaster. For Ichinose's side, losing it meant falling into the pit of the expulsion zone. The end of the line.

"Step aside, Horikita-san..." Ichinose's voice sounded hoarse, broken by exhaustion. "Please. I can't... we can't afford to fall here. My friends... they're counting on me."

Suzune did not waver. She adjusted her stance, planting her feet firmly on the treacherous roots of the ground.

"Sentimentality won't save you this time, Ichinose-san," Suzune replied, her tone icy but tinged with a hint of pity. "We are all playing with our academic lives on the line. If I back down now, I would betray the efforts of those who stayed behind supporting me. If you want that device, you'll have to take it by force. Though I doubt you have any energy left for that."

"You leave me no choice!"

With a cry that tore through the jungle's calm, Ichinose lunged forward. There was no grace in her movements; she propelled herself purely on raw adrenaline. She swung a direct punch toward Suzune's face—a clumsy strike dictated by sheer panic.

Suzune didn't even blink. Years of rigorous martial arts training and the experience accumulated in previous battles manifested instinctively. She tilted her head slightly, letting Ichinose's fist graze the empty air beside her cheek. In the next heartbeat, Suzune caught the pink-haired girl's extended wrist, spun on her heel to absorb the momentum of the attack, and delivered a sharp palm strike to her opponent's solar plexus.

The impact knocked the wind right out of Ichinose. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed into the mud, gasping desperately as she tried to regain her breath.

Suzune took a step back, looking down at her. Wasting no time, she knelt and picked up the black device from the ground. She slipped it into her tracksuit pocket and zipped it shut. The technical confrontation was over. Victory was decided.

Or so she thought.

"Not... Not yet!" a choked cry erupted from Ichinose's throat.

Refusing to accept reality, Ichinose gathered the last remnants of her willpower. From the ground, she lunged at Suzune's legs in a desperate takedown attempt—a kamikaze tackle meant to drag her down into the mire, with the vague hope of ripping the pocket away with her teeth if necessary. It was a move entirely devoid of logic, the pure survival instinct of someone refusing to drown.

However, the gap in their physical capability and emotional control was immense.

Before Ichinose could wrap her arms around Suzune's thighs, Suzune reacted with astonishing speed. She took a short sidestep, evading the main brunt of the charge, and dropped her center of gravity. Her left hand shot forward with pinpoint precision, burying itself into Ichinose's pink hair.

With a firm, sharp tug, Suzune pulled her hair upward, halting Ichinose's momentum and forcing her head back.

The grip was relentless. Ichinose let out a choked groan of pain, gritting her teeth tightly while her hands clawed uselessly at the air, trapped in a position where she had neither leverage nor balance to defend herself. Her face, smudged with mud on her left cheek, was left completely exposed to the harsh sunlight and the piercing gaze of her victor.

Suzune half-knelt over her opponent's body, pinning her down completely beneath her weight. The submission was absolute.

Despite the tension of the moment and the dirt smudging her own face, Suzune maintained an unshakeable calm. With her free right hand, she took a brief second to brush a strand of her own dark hair over her shoulder—a gesture filled with an almost regal confidence that contrasted drastically with the humiliation of the girl lying beneath her.

"Look at you, Ichinose-san," Suzune said, staring directly into her eyes. Horikita's red pupils shone with a cold intensity. "Is this the leader who was supposed to guide her class to the top? Losing control like this... it's pathetic."

Ichinose groaned, physical pain blending with the bitterness of absolute defeat. Tears of frustration began to mix with the sweat at her temples.

"You... don't understand..." Ichinose managed to squeeze out through gritted teeth. "If I lose here... them... all my friends will pay for my weakness..."

"I understand perfectly," Suzune interrupted, slightly loosening her grip on her hair but not letting go. "That is exactly why I cannot allow myself to lose. The difference between us today isn't the desire to protect our classmates. It's that I accepted the weight of my failures and learned to harden my heart when necessary. You, on the other hand, kept trying to carry everyone with a gentle smile, hoping the world would be fair. And the reality of this exam has crushed you."

Ichinose closed her eyes, letting a single tear carve a clean path through the mud on her cheek. Her hands stopped struggling, dropping heavily onto the damp earth. Her resistance had evaporated; the fire of desperation had died out, leaving behind only the ashes of resignation.

Suzune slowly released her. She stood up, brushing the dirt off her tracksuit pants. She cast one final look down at the pink-haired girl, who remained prostrated on the ground, absorbing the crushing weight of failure.

"I'm not going to expel you, Ichinose-san. The exam still has a couple of days left, and it's up to you to find another way out. But if you cross my path again... I won't show any mercy."

Turning on her heel, Suzune Horikita stepped back into the thick of the jungle. The sun was beginning to dip, tinting the sky a bloody shade of orange. With the tokens safely secured in her pocket, she walked with a firm step, leaving behind the laments of a fallen rival.

The Plushie Incident

One day at ANHS, Kiyotaka was on his computer researching various things (like yogurt preparation) when an advertisement caught his eye.

"Create your custom plushie here" (We also make student plushies—just enter your ID).

It piqued Kiyo's interest and, after thinking it over for a while, he decided to order one. But for a reason he couldn't quite explain even to himself, he didn't enter his own ID. Instead, he entered the ID of a certain black-haired girl who would definitely punch him if she ever found out (or so he believed).

The next day, after finishing an economics class about why every purchase has a specific purpose (whether material or sentimental), a deliveryman knocked on the door. This surprised most of the students, as packages were supposed to be delivered to the individual dorm rooms.

Kiyotaka was also surprised but assumed it was a mistake, so he didn't claim the package. The deliveryman informed them that if the package remained unclaimed, it would be destroyed. Hearing this, the majority decided to open it just to see what was inside. Chabashira-sensei reluctantly agreed and began to open the box.

Everyone gasped when they saw a tiny, super-cute version of Suzune Horikita. Suzune herself blushed deeply upon seeing the plushie.

Almost everyone in the room erupted into shouts about how cute it was. Some boys claimed they wanted it; some were already thinking of ways to claim it for themselves, while others were already arguing over who deserved to have it.

But what no one expected was to see Kiyotaka leap from his seat, running at an unreal speed toward Chabashira-sensei. He snatched the plushie into his hands and turned to the deliveryman.

"I'm sorry, this package is mine. I thought it would be taken to my room."

"Ah, yes, my apologies. Since no address was entered, we tracked the requester's ID to his classroom. Sign here."

Kiyotaka signed calmly, and the deliveryman left. As he turned back, another wave of shouts and questions crashed over him.

"Oiii, Kiyotaka?! What is the meaning of this?! Why did you order a Suzune plushie!?!?" Sudo yelled.

"Eww, imagine a guy you don't even like having a plushie of you," Shinohara said.

"Yeah! What makes you think she gave you her consent?" Ike shouted.

At this, everyone turned to look at Suzune, only to be shocked by a side of her they had never seen before. Suzune was completely flushed, her face a mix of surprise and embarrassment.

"K-kawaii..." Karuizawa whispered without realizing it.

But the moment didn't last long. Snapping out of it, Suzune's expression shifted from surprise and shame to pure anger.

"Ayanokouji-kun..."

She took off running after him. Detecting the danger, Kiyotaka bolted without a second thought.

Out in the hallway, more concerned with the embarrassment her friend was putting her through than with breaking school rules, Suzune continued the pursuit. "Give me that plushie, Ayanokouji-kun!"

"I'm sorry, Horikita, that's not possible."

"What do you mean 'not possible'?! Give it to me now!!!"

Several students from other classes wondered what was going on, but others, ignored the scene and went about their business. One of them was Ryuuen, the tyrant of Class C. Before he knew it, he was on the ground due to a sudden impact.

"Watch where you're going, you idiot... huh? What's this?" he said, picking up the Suzune plushie. But suddenly, he froze for a moment. He felt a chill behind him that reminded him of that moment on the rooftop—the first time he had ever experienced true fear.

"Hand that over, Ryuuen," Kiyotaka said in a cold voice, his eyes making the magenta-haired boy break into a cold sweat for an instant.

His surprise didn't last long, and his combative attitude returned.

"Heh, so this toy is yours, Ayanokouji... if you want it back, you'll have to—"

He was quickly interrupted by a black-haired girl who looked more like a Yokai than a high school student.

"There you are, Ayanokouji-kun! Give me that plushie now!" she said, with fire coming out of her eyes.

Before he knew it, the plushie had vanished from Ryuuen's hands. When he turned to see what happened, he only saw the brown-haired boy's back as he ran away, with the black-haired girl chasing close behind.

"Weirdos..." Ryuuen thought.

The chase continued for a while until it reached a dead end where Suzune had cornered Kiyotaka near the edge of the island.

"You can't escape, Ayanokouji-kun! Give it to me!"

Kiyotaka was analyzing all possible escape routes when Suzune lunged for him. After a bit of a struggle and a sudden gust of wind, the plushie tumbled over the edge and fell into the sea.

Suzune let out a melancholy but relieved sigh.

"Well, I guess that's one way to solve it..."

But before she could finish, she stood speechless as the brown-haired boy dove after the plushie without a second thought, leaving her mouth agape.

Kiyotaka had jumped off the side of the island. That was a clear violation of school rules—an offense that would lead to expulsion—not to mention the potential injuries from hitting the water from that height.

"KIYOTAKA!" the black-haired girl screamed, not realizing she was calling him by his first name in public. She was more worried about his well-being than the broken rules.

Suzune stared down at where he had jumped, her mind racing. Just as she was about to find a staff member to rescue him, she heard the sound of wet shoes beside her.

Kiyotaka, completely soaked and with a few scratches, stood there holding the plushie—which, miraculously, didn't have a single drop of water on it.

"Kiyotaka! Are you okay? Do you need medical attention?"

The boy opened his eyes in surprise, which confused her. Had she said something strange? Realizing she had called him by his first without any care in the world, the blush returned to her face. Embarrassment was momentarily replaced by anger and worry.

"What were you thinking?! How could you risk yourself like that just for a toy!"

The boy asked himself the same question. What he had done went against all logic. Risking significant injury and expulsion for a toy was beyond irrational. Why had he done it?

He didn't have the answer, but he knew one thing: seeing the Suzune plushie falling into the sea, his only thought was to prevent it from being lost or damaged. Before he could even consider the consequences, he had already jumped.

"I'm sorry," was all he said.

"You're an idiot," she told him, giving him small taps as she rested her forehead against his chest. Her eyes stung slightly; seeing him jump had affected her more than she thought. "All for a toy... you're an idiot..."

"I'm sorry," he said again.

He wrapped his arms around her in a hug. Despite being soaked, she felt something much warmer than she expected.

"Let's go back. A doctor needs to check you."

"I don't think that's a good idea."

"Why do you say that?"

"If they find out I jumped off the island, I'll be in trouble."

This time, the hit she gave him was harder.

"Ouch! What was that for?"

"For being an idiot. But you're right. Let's go to your room; at least I'll help you clean those scratches."

The walk to Kiyo's room was silent but not uncomfortable. He glanced at Suzune a few times, only to see her look away, though the tips of her ears were bright red. Once in his room, Suzune quickly began cleaning his wounds. Kiyotaka watched her the whole time, wondering what had possessed him to jump. A new question entered his mind:

"If I did that for a toy shaped like Suzune... what would I be capable of doing for the real her?"

It was a question he didn't necessarily want the answer to, but he knew he couldn't stand the thought of anything bad happening to her. He would do the possible and the impossible to protect her—of that, he was certain.

"Done. Just remember to take a bath, or you might catch a cold," Suzune said, pulling him from his thoughts.

"Thank you," he replied.

Her ruby eyes met his golden ones. The blush returned to her face.

"I don't know why you'd do something like that for a toy, knowing you have the real girl right in front of you..." she said, looking away with that tender expression that only Kiyotaka ever saw.

The boy lifted her chin with his hand and planted a chaste kiss on her lips.

"Dummy..." she whispered, giving him another light tap on the chest.

"Ouch," he grimaced. "I think I actually broke a rib."

"And you're this calm...?! Tomorrow you're going to the doctor whether you like it or not, do you hear me, Kiyotaka?"

"Alright, Suzune..." he replied, using her first name in return, knowing they were alone without the risk or someone evesdroping

"Dummy..." she said before kissing him again.

After returning to her own room, the girl took a bath to calm the feeling of consuming her inside. She knew their relationship was a secret, but she also knew that what she felt for him, he felt for her too.

Walking toward her bed, she looked at her desk. Sitting there was a plushie very similar to the one that caused all the chaos—except this one was shaped like Kiyotaka.

"Baka..." Suzune whispered, pressing it to her chest.

Back in his room, Kiyotaka felt a small twinge of pain and remembered what she said.

"I'm definitely going to the doctor tomorrow."

The third-year uninhabited island survival exam has concluded. As each student is utterly exhausted, the next “Token Collection Special Exam” is announced.

Students are divided into groups of 16, with four members from each class, to collect tokens. While competing for rankings among a total of 10 groups, any student whose tokens drop to zero first during the exam, as well as the student with the lowest number of tokens in the entire grade at the end of the exam, will be expelled.

Furthermore, the tasks required to earn tokens test raw ability, such as academic skill and physical strength. Although tokens can be transferred, the vast uninhabited island limits the opportunities to pass them to specific students.

And then, one student begins to run wild by exploiting the rules—!?

“It was me who decided to have you expelled. So I might as well grant you at least that wish.”
