New Cote SS released! - Special SS: Anniversary Party

Welcome to the Classroom of the Elite — Special SS: Anniversary Party

Author: Shougo Kinugasa

The glittering venue spread out as far as the eye could see.

Standing right next to me, Hoshinomiya let out a small "Wow" as her eyes sparkled.

"Just as you'd expect from a gathering of the financial elite, they've really spent a crazy amount of money on this, haven't they, Sae-chan?"

"It certainly seems that way."

"Aren't those celebrities over there? And over there too! Wait, are those people over there politicians?"

"That has absolutely nothing to do with us."

"It’s not entirely unrelated, is it~? Since it's the school's founding anniversary, it's a school party, and we teachers are indispensable to the school. In other words, we're practically the main characters—well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but we're like the co-stars, right?"

Looking around restlessly, Hoshinomiya's eyes sparkled even more.

"You're completely wrong. We are strictly minor characters. Are you even listening to me?"

"I'm listening, I'm listening. But more importantly, shouldn't we look for some good-looking guys? Today might be the day we find our fated someone and marry into wealth~"

"Ridiculous."

"Even if it's ridiculous, who cares? You've got to have at least that much fun~ Oh, look! Isn't that dandy older gentleman over there with the eyepatch super cool? He's talking so familiarly with the Prime Minister. His age is barely within my acceptable range, too."

Reluctantly going along with the conversation, Chabashira followed Hoshinomiya's gaze to catch sight of the man.

Just as Hoshinomiya had assessed, his age was clearly well above theirs, but even from a distance, one could feel his dignified demeanor, a commanding presence that didn't yield even to the Prime Minister, and a distinct sense of refinement.

"From what I can see, that is quite an amazing gentleman. Definitely a total sharp professional. Check, check!"

"A sharp professional? Well, he might indeed be someone incredible, but you really have no shame. If the person is high-status, do age and position become secondary to you?"

"Of course they become secondary! I mean, let me ask you instead, Sae-chan—do you avoid romance just because you care about the other person's age or status? Normally you would give it a pass, right?"

"That's—but still..."

"If you want something normal, why not try workplace romance? Like Mashima-kun, maybe?"

"Absolutely not."

"Wow, so fast... I almost feel guilty for even bringing up his name."

"No, of course Mashima... Mashima-sensei is a well-rounded human being. But for better or worse, to me, he's in the same category as you—a friend. Nothing more, nothing less."

"Then, isn't there anyone you like? You're at a good age yourself, Sae-chan."

"No one."

"Really? Then, you don't even remember that person?"

Those words from Hoshinomiya were slightly testing Chabashira. It was a devil's whisper, independent of her friend's actual romantic affairs, simply wanting to see her get flustered.

However, unlike in the past, even having that existence flashed before her eyes did not shake her heart.

"...Hmm. Then, suppose everyone in this world except Sae-chan has vanished. But actually, there was exactly one man left. Who would that person be?"

"What kind of ridiculous question is that?"

"Just bear with me, bear with me. Imagine it in your head. Humanity is gone, and the only ones left are Adam and Eve. Who would be the Adam for you, Sae-chan?"

How absurd. Sighing at the thought, Chabashira flatly refused to answer.

"You're as stiff as always, Sae-chan."

"Leave me alone."

Though Chabashira had genuinely dismissed it, during the subsequent silence, a gap momentarily opened up in her mind.

And she thought about it.

A hypothetical scenario. If she absolutely had to choose one partner right now in this world...

It was a small delusion, precisely because such an absurd development was impossible.

While she thought no one could possibly come to mind, the face of one male suddenly surfaced.

"No, there's no way..."

It certainly shouldn't be that she was interested in him as a member of the opposite sex. It was just that a certain student, vastly younger than her, who possessed a strangely mature and mysterious atmosphere, crossed her mind.

But she immediately banished that thought from her mind.

"As a teacher, that's impossible..."

She accidentally mumbled it aloud and gasped. If Hoshinomiya next to her heard it, she would make all kinds of weird assumptions.

She worried about that, but there was no response.

"Chie...?"

In the brief moment Chabashira had looked away, Hoshinomiya, who was supposed to be standing right next to her, had vanished.

With a sense of foreboding, she let her gaze wander and spotted her happily chatting with the eyepatched man near the distant guest seats.

"When did she...? If there's one thing to admire, it's that proactive drive—no, I don't want to learn from that."

Unable to chase after her, she waited on the spot, and Hoshinomiya returned a few minutes later. With a strangely light step and a smile, she looked as if she had reaped quite a harvest.

"Don't go doing whatever you please, Chie. We are teachers, you know."

"Today is Saturday, so I'm just an ordinary woman~"

"...Even on days off. It's rude to force yourself into a conversation like that."

"It was a coincidence, a total coincidence! We just happened to end up talking, so don't get so angry."

"I find that hard to believe... Regardless, let's head to our seats, it's almost time."

"Yes, yes, I get it."

The two of them walked over to the invited guest seats.

"Hey, hey, I managed to get a lot of info out of that gentleman just now. As expected, he's a super amazing guy just like I thought! His name is Shirogane—"

Just as she was about to triumphantly share her achievements, the host's voice rang out from the microphone.

“Now then, we will commence the Advanced Nurturing High School Founding Anniversary Party.”

"Our conversation is over."

"Then you'll have to listen later. He might be my future husband, after all."

"I won't listen."

The students would soon be facing the uninhabited island exam. In the midst of this, the teachers, too, were taking the lead to face their own duties and battles as adults.
