Transferring courses stress (Law, Medical, Science)
Hi everyone! I’m currently really stressed and confused about which course I should transfer into, and I’d really appreciate some outside perspectives.
I’m currently a first-year student doing a Bachelor of Arts, and I’m considering transferring into either Law or something in the medical/science field BY OCT 5TH (I think that's the date to submit my transfer request or something)
In high school, I was always interested in subjects like Psychology and HHD, especially anything related to the human body and understanding people. I’ve considered Psychology as a career, but I’m not sure I actually see myself working as a psychologist long-term. I’m also unsure about things like employment opportunities, salary, and whether I’d actually enjoy the day-to-day work.
On the other hand, I’ve recently realised that I have a really strong passion for women’s rights, equality and human rights, which is what initially made me seriously consider Law. I feel like studying Law could give me a way to understand these issues properly and potentially work in an area where I can actually make a difference. However, I don’t think I’d enjoy the typical corporate law firm lifestyle at all. I’m not really interested in spending my life working in a law firm, so I’m unsure what other career paths in Law might suit me.
I also considered Finance because I’d say I’m reasonably good at maths, but honestly, I don’t particularly enjoy maths enough to want Finance to be my career for the rest of my life.
(Also considered dentist, but I'd have to transfer uni since Monash doesn't offer a dentistry course; seems like a lot)
At this point, what I really want is:
- A career I won’t hate doing every day
- Good/comfortable pay and financial stability
- Strong employment prospects after graduating
- Ideally not 5+ years of study (like a doctor, etc)
- A degree that leads to a relatively stable career, rather than having to constantly worry about what I’ll do after graduating
- A career where I can still have a life outside of work and eventually pursue other interests
I’m honestly quite lost because I can see positives in both Law and the medical/science side, but I don’t know which one actually fits me better.
If anyone has studied Law, Psychology, allied health, medical science, or another similar field, I’d really appreciate hearing about what your actual career is like — especially the day-to-day work, salary, employment prospects, workload/stress, length of study, and whether you genuinely enjoy it.
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who didn’t necessarily end up in the stereotypical career associated with their degree. I’m trying to figure out what options are actually out there before I make a pretty major decision!
