New apartment smells like cigarette smoke (Seattle WA)

We’re renting from private owners, it’s their first time being landlords. They’ve just moved out of the country (today).

Tonight we went over to drop some things off and do some measuring. Our lease officially starts tomorrow, we have carpet cleaners coming at 10 am (they didn’t clean them before the move) and Thursday our movers are scheduled.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the cigarette smoke. When we saw the place before we assumed the smell of second hand smoke was the landlord- we saw cigarettes on the front step. But tonight upon leaving I was nauseous and my husband’s sinuses were irritated.

I’m not sure what to do, it seems like it’s going to be s nightmare to get smoke smell out of a property if possible at all. What can we do? Are we just out of luck and set to be miserable for a year?

Could this be mold?

We found a dark spot in front of window in our new rental. Could these be mold?

Located in the PNW, very rainy area.
