Seeking guidance on using public domain characters: Copyright vs. Trademark implications

I am researching public domain characters and works that have also lost their trademark protections. I am interested in using these characters for creative projects, such as comics, but I am uncertain about the legal boundaries regarding their names and likenesses. Specifically, can I use a character’s name, produce comics featuring them, and sell merchandise depicting their likeness without infringing on any lingering trademark rights? I would appreciate any advice or guidance on how to navigate these legal distinctions. Thank you!

Question about The Character & Paddy the Pelican ?are they in public domain ?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking into using the vintage character Paddy the Pelican for an upcoming project, and I wanted to double-check the exact copyright status of both the shorts and the character itself.

From what I can find online, the 1950 animated series The Adventures of Paddy the Pelican (produced by Sam Singer / Tempe-Toons) is widely considered to be in the public domain because the 1954 copyright registrations were never renewed.

However, since copyright law can get incredibly muddy when it comes to the distinction between a work versus a character, I want to be 100% sure:

  1. Are both the specific 1950 animated episodes and the character of Paddy the Pelican completely free of copyright restrictions?
  2. If I create entirely new, original artwork, stories, or animations using Paddy, am I completely in the clear legally, or are there any weird lingering trademarks or commercial traps I need to watch out for?
  3. Can people also use the Title "The Adventures of Paddy the Pelican " for their creative work ?

Looking for "So Bad It's Good" Public Domain (Foreign /Domestic Any Languages )Movies to Stream

Hey everyone! I’m putting together a movie night and I want to dive into the treasure trove of public domain cinema. I'm looking for recommendations that are legally free to stream/remix, but specifically, I want the absolute cheesiest, most incompetent B-movies, sci-fi, or horror.

  • I know the classics (Manos: The Hands of Fate, Plan 9, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians).
  • What are some lesser-known, "so bad it's good" PD movies?
  • Also, does anyone have favorites where a foreign film was adapted into a hilariously bad domestic remake (or vice versa) that has also fallen into the public domain?

Give me your best (worst) recommendations!
