Perception of Asian features in Asia

My friend and I were hanging out and they showed me Threads, apparently it’s an extension of Instagram and they were showing me Japan travel videos and discussions.

My friend could read some Japanese so they translated some of it to me. And there a lot of Japanese people saying they have tourist fatigue, overseas experiences and so on. Then they found a random thread discussing the appearance of a half Chinese half Japanese girl. Apparently she’s very beautiful and described as having “white skin, long limbs, big eyes, and an appearance not common in Japanese people”. The Japanese people in the comments were saying things like “no, that’s not common in the Chinese people I see” or “Chinese in the north have Russian blood so it’s better” or “No way, the rate of attractiveness in Chinese is same or lower than that of Japanese”.

I was shocked that some of the comments think a natural full Asian person can’t possibly have such features and they must have *some* Russian admixture if they were Chinese. 😑🙄 Not to mention the terrible racism against Chinese people. Very disappointing.

So then I wanted to see how people from other Asian countries felt on Threads. And to my dismay, people from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and even Indonesians think that white western features were better looking than native Asian looks.

Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong people on Threads do talk about white people appearances and they say things like “so envious, you don’t see handsome and beautiful white people on screen anymore, but in the everyday life there are stunning beauties who stop you in your tracks”, “the only advantage Asian people have is aging slower than white people but their protruding features are much more beautiful than Asians”, “truly stunning Asian people are so rare unlike the many stunning white people”.

When it comes to describing Asian features, I notice a lot of Asians in Asia say Asian features are flat, not protruding enough, proportions off, upper half of the body is longer than the lower half, and head is too big. I’m like….i never noticed these things. And I don’t think they’re true?? I’ve seen plenty of Asians when it comes to good proportions and good figures and facial features.

One thing I don’t like is when all of these groups, including some Koreans is when someone compliments Koreans as handsome or pretty, someone always to say “BuT pLastIC sUrgerY”. And it’s coming from fellow Asians too! It’s one thing when non Asians do it but another when other Asians parrot the same thing. I’m not even Korean but seeing this is terrible! So what if it’s plastic surgery? Pretty is pretty. And naturally good looking Koreans exist just like how naturally good looking Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, Indonesians, etc exist! Plenty of white people get plastic surgery too. They get rhinoplasty and boobs jobs all the time! But I don’t see Asians saying “plastic surgery” when it comes to white people.

I don’t see Asians ganging up to bully white people or white appearances so why this energy for Asians?? 🫩 Asian people are completely capable of producing handsome men and beautiful women WITHOUT white admixture. We don’t need it! And it’s high time we appreciate our own features more! And stop putting down Asian features in our groups or other groups! White features are not inherently better looking than Asian ones!

Are the thoughts and feelings on Threads representative of the Asian people in Asia in real life?

And I know the politics are complicated in Asia but I sincerely wish and hope Asian people across countries can get along. I pray to see it within my lifetime no matter what naysayers say.

Do luxurious expat packages still exist in Hong Kong, Singapore, or other Asian cities?

Recently my friend wanted to potentially relocate to Asia to work. They’re in finance and have been doing some exploration and they asked me if I knew anything about it. I didn’t so I did my own googling.

A lot of stories popped up on Reddit and websites came from white expats. Whether American or European. Their experience may be a tad dated but it goes like this, housing/schooling paid for, significantly higher pay than locals, very positive receptions from locals, and the male expats even boasted that they get so much attention from local women they could out on a date every day of the week if they wanted 🤮 🤢. Please tell me that’s not true in 2026??

So I want to hear from you guys. What’s it like as an Asian or Asian American expat in Hong Kong, Singapore, or any other Asian city? Could be pay, social life, any observations. Thanks!
