How do you prepare to visually identify reporting points at an unfamiliar airfield?
Yesterday I was flying again — yay, the weather is finally nice again!
I’m a student pilot in Austria, and yesterday I flew to two different airfields for the first time (LOAN, LHFM). My instructor showed me the various entry points, reporting points, and where exactly I should make my radio calls.
In theory, I had prepared everything beforehand: the route, reporting points, entry procedures, and so on. But in practice, I’m pretty sure I would have struggled to visually identify some of the waypoints and reporting points from the air.
So my question is: how do you handle flying to an unfamiliar airfield?
I know many aircraft have Garmin systems with GPS and all the relevant information shown on the screen, but how do you personally prepare for this during flight planning, especially when it comes to visually recognizing reporting points and entry routes?
