Relationships and dating in Rwanda

I wanted to share a few thoughts and impressions on my experiences with dating and relationships in Rwanda.

To be honest, I am quite shocked about how prevalent transactional relationships in Kigali’s dating scene are. Yes, you meet women that search for genuine connections but according to my experiences thus far these are rare to find. Most women I have met in my 2 years here, are very quick to communicate that they are expecting money, financial support or at least fancy dinners etc if you want their company. Funny enough, often times their company is quite boring 😅 at least as far as conversations, intellect and humor goes - seems like beauty is the only parameter in this.

As a man, I am often wondering where that expectation is coming from? Like my company and time is not enough.

In most places these relationships have a label: prostitution! Funny enough this is prohibited in Rwanda.

Your thoughts?

Work ethics in Rwanda

Hi there, I have a question concerning regarding work ethics I made while working in Rwanda.

My impression has been that (can’t generalize ofc) there is a pattern that people are very passive at work - that is people need very clear instructions and then execute what they are told by their bosses. However, what’s missing is being proactive and especially thinking critically. Also people are not very honest when they made a mistake, which goes so far that some prefer to to blatantly lie in your face instead of admitting that a mistake has been made and suggest a remedy for the situation.

Is that only my observation? Why is that the case?

Street children in Kigali

I am very surprised that you don’t really see homeless and especially street children in Kigali - the only place where I have witnessed them was around the bus station in Nyabugogo.

Are there services in place where they receive support?

Rwanda impressions by a European

Hello Everyone,

After having lived in various African countries, including several years in Rwanda I wanted to share some of my experiences and impressions.

I am always amazed when returning to Kigali from other cities in the region, let’s say Nairobi or Kampala, how different the vibe in Kigali is. The scenery and calmness you feel when returning to Kigali is always so soothing. I genuinely love the pace and friendliness of life in Rwanda.

However, I found it very difficult to get my head around some nuances of life in Rwanda. For one, as someone from outside I found it very difficult to integrate in Kigali life as opposed to many other places. While it’s easy and safe to go everywhere it’s hard to make Rwandan friends and build genuine connections - this has been much much easier in other East African countries. I know one can’t generalize but I often experienced people in Rwanda to be very timid and closed. Have any others made similar experiences?

Another thing is rules … being a German, we always have the reputation that we stick to rules. However, Rwanda is taking it to another level - public life and space is so rigorously regulated that I sometimes find it difficult to accept. Some rules just seem outright silly (like having to wear running gear on the running tracks in Kimihurura or around the golf course) and people follow them, no questions asked.

Cycling Sonnenallee

Hello Everyone,
I cycle through Sonnenallee on a daily basis on my commutes to work, gym or elsewhere.
It has always been a dangerous road to cycle on but I have the feeling things getting more intense lately.
It’s not necessarily the amount of traffic but the reckless behavior of car drivers - parking in 2nd lane, not keeping any distance when overtaking. I already had a few very close calls due to idiots not paying any attention to cyclists. When confronting them, no sorry or any apology at all - the other time someone got aggressive towards me even when I told him in a friendly manner that he should pay more attention.

Have you guys had similar experiences? How do you normally handle this?

Also feel like the police is not doing anything!!! Especially around Azzam on Sonnenallee people don’t give a shit about any rule, police drives by but no action whatsoever…
I am not at all someone who is pedantic about all rules being kept but it’s just outright dangerous for cyclists there!
