Help identifying a typewriter

I’ve been diving into typewriters, and I was thinking about getting one for my wife as a combination birthday/(late) congratulations on your masters degree. She is a high school English teacher, just like her grandmother, so I asked her uncle if he remembers his mother having a typewriter, and the best he could do is say it was a Smith Corona and said it looked like the one in the picture. I’ve already figured out that this one is a Montgomery Ward model, so that seems unlikely to be a match. He said that he and his sister have a spotty memory of it, and they were born in the late 60s. My wife was born in 92, and we don’t know if it was still around for her to remember, so that’s the approximate timeframe. Some quick research got me looking at the Galaxie and the Super Sterling. Any help identifying models that would fit that mold would be appreciated.

Needle?

I’m new to typewriters (my dad had one, and so did my grandparents), but I had never really used one until recently. I saw a listing saying that a typewriter needed a needle repair or replacement, but I can’t figure out what that is? Can anyone help me?
