New DC system draft
I just had an idea for changing how DCs work in dnd. Basically DCs would be changed so that rather from set values you pick one of 7 "steps" and do some math. When you do this you either decide if it's a static or context based, static DCs are meant to be things that never change like an item or something like a lock will be the same difficulty to pick forever, however context DCs are based on the level of difficulty relative to the player's power level so something hard to a level 2 player is different from something hard to a level 18 player. Each step has a value associated with it that's used for the math, static DCs are equal to the value of the step +4, and context DCs are equal to the value of the step plus double the party's proficiency bonus. The steps are as follows:
Trivial is 0, Easy is 4, Simple is 8, Average is 12, Hard is 16, Challenging is 20, and Impossible is 24.
For example a Static Hard DC is 20. Or for example a Context Hard DC for a level 7 party is 22.
I have two examples for how you could implement this.
Spell save DCs could be changed to be Context Simple DC.
Hiding could be changed so as an action you can make a Static Average Dexterity (Stealth) check and on a success you become invisible. And the step of the DC changes based on the situation like if you're in dim like it goes down one step, if you're in darkness it goes down by two steps, if you are behind total cover it goes down by two steps, and so on. For example if hiding in dim light it changes to a Static Simple Dexterity (Stealth) check.
