New acquisition!

I just got these 3 TASCAM units yesterday from FB marketplace - 112 MkII, CD 200iB, and CD RW750. Externals are extremely clean, almost new, but of course it’s the condition on the inside that really matters. The CD and CD-R both play through headphones but the tape deck gives the blinking lights error. Haven’t yet had a chance to hook them to my stereo or open them up. What can I expect to find on the tape deck? Old melted belts and possibly broken gears would be my first guess. I bought the three mainly for the cassette, the others are just sort of extra.

I’m 73 so I have lived through a lot of audio firsts and fads. I have both a modern (Yamaha and Fluance) and a vintage system (mostly Marantz, just sold Teac r2r). I just received a Nakamichi CR-1A from that auction site and it seems to work beautifully except for the counter. When I press reset it zeroes but then freezes; rewind will bring it back to life. I have read this can be a belt, reset button not returning all the way or binding, or the counter mechanism itself. I just emailed the seller and he said the belt was inspected and “deemed ok” and that it is probably one of the other 2 reasons. He said both belts were replaced about 2 years ago and the unit does indeed look clean and well cared for.

I have not yet opened it up and don’t know how difficult it will be to work on. Supposedly the counter belt can be replaced by only removing the top cover but quarters are tight. How about the other counter issues that I listed?

I also have a Marantz 5420 deck/mixer from the mid 70s (TOTL at the time) and the Nak had no problem playing a tape that the Marantz would hang on, but it matches the rest of my system so it stays. I think I am really going to enjoy my new toy!
