Can a tax lawyer get your past due amount reduced? I know they can get around fees and other items but really was wondering is it worth hiring a lawyer if I’m past due about 12k? Past due was around 7k but w interest lol

I’m on a payment plan now. It’s over 2 years past due and SC tax office said they can’t reduce the fees because of the time frame has passed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks
