Fluctuating neurological symptoms for 1 month with normal testing
33 , male, no major prior neurological history.
For about the last month I’ve been having strange fluctuating neurological/sensory symptoms and I’m trying to understand if anyone has experienced something similar or has ideas of things I should ask my doctors about.
The symptoms started in early April. I had two episodes about a week apart where I suddenly got a “wave” sensation through my body and then one entire side of my body went numb for about an hour (first left side, second time right side). Face was involved but no facial droop, no weakness, and I could still walk/function normally.
ER did CT, X-rays, bloodwork, and tick panel(one to two weeks after a small tick was on me.) — all normal.
Since then symptoms have been very on/off and migratory:
- pins and needles
- random itching/burning sensations
- intermittent numbness
- dizziness/lightheaded “off” feeling
- neck/upper back tightness
- pressure at base of skull/ears/jaw
- calf tightness
- occasional chest/arm aches
The strange part is:
- symptoms fluctuate heavily throughout the day
- symptoms can improve dramatically for a day or two and then flare again
- no persistent weakness or loss of function
- I can still golf, walk normally, lift things, etc.
PT and chiropractor both felt it didn’t fit a simple pinched nerve because symptoms move around so much and involve legs/side/back too.
Bloodwork and autoimmune testing so far have been normal.
At this point I’m mostly trying to understand:
- does this sound familiar to anyone?
- are there conditions that can cause widespread fluctuating sensory symptoms without weakness?
- does the positional/neck component point toward anything specific?
