Gas Masks in general
Aside from the classic depiction of a person wearing one in the media, gas masks, whether modern or vintage, such as the GP-5 mask, protect against airborne viruses, deadly spores, and fluid spills. However, they limit peripheral vision, make breathing difficult during extreme exercise, and require expired filters to function properly, so approach it as a piece of equipment rather than a cosmetic item.
Pros:
Biological Protection: Inhibits the inhalation of aerosolized viral strains and keeps infectious fluids or blood spray from coming into touch with your eyes, nose or mouth.
Environmental Hazards: In a deteriorating metropolis, it is essential to navigate smoke from burning buildings, tear gas, or areas dense with hazardous fungal spores.
Scavenging: Protects against unpleasant smells and dangerous mildew when looting abandoned dwellings or cleaning fermenting organic materials (such as rotting corpses).
Cons:
Filter Expiration: Gas mask canisters have a limited life. They become useless after being saturated with toxins or after being used for an extended period of time and must be replaced on a regular basis.
Physical Exertion: Breathing through a regular respirator during a sprint or melee combat produces significant fatigue and can result in harmful heat buildup.
Reduced Awareness: The rubber/plastic shell and single or dual eyepieces severely limit peripheral vision and sound, making it difficult to detect flanking zombies or human threats.
Carbon Monoxide Warning: Standard gas masks filter out particulates and some gases, but they do not protect you from carbon monoxide in enclosed burning spaces.
Preferred practices and alternatives:
Carry a Spare: It should be treated as specialized equipment rather than something you wear every day. Strap it to the outside of your go-bag for easy deployment when entering polluted areas.
Filter Stockpiling: If you intend to use a gas mask, such as a CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) model, keep compatible filters on hand (for example, NATO 40mm thread canisters). Note: when looking for filters, refer the filter type classification depending what toxins and hazards you're dealing with
Prioritize Face Shields: For daily foraging in known zombie-infested locations where the air is not toxic, lightweight clear plastic face shields worn over a N95 mask provide fluid protection without the visibility and breathing restrictions of a full respirator.
