Perhaps some well travelled yanks can explain this

I really can’t understand how yanks really believe this stuff uncritically. Let’s run through it:

  1. Public toilets - some have to be paid for but most are free? At least in the UK.
  2. Water - brother if you’re paying for water in a restaurant then you’ve been fleeced. Ask for tap water rather than still in future.
  3. Free refills - loads of places have this eg Nando’s
  4. Free chips - depends on the restaurant but plenty of places do it
  5. Free warm bread - tell me you don’t have a passport without telling me
  6. Ice in drinks - what does that even mean? If you ask for ice you’ll get it. Or if you get a drink they’ll ask if you want ice with it.
  7. Air conditioning - this is the only one that’s mostly true, but even then it’s quite common in offices, businesses etc.
  8. Car parks - this one’s pretty vague and depends on location. It can be difficult finding parking in historic city centres but the upside is you have a gorgeous walkable built environment instead of hundreds of yards of bleak nothingness.
  9. Drive throughs - we have drive throughs 🤣🤣

If it was a joke or said ironically that would be one thing but people really believe we live in a state of povvo commie squalor. Why exactly can’t the American mind comprehend that we don’t?

My personal theory is that too many yanks have used up their scarce holiday days on once in a lifetime trips to central Paris, been ripped off by tourist traps and gone back jaded and confused.
