Is it advisable to purchase a Sigma 170-500mm f5-6.3 APO DG lens for a Canon 50d?

I pretty much only take pictures of birds on short hikes and what not, and right now I have a Canon 55-250 IS STM lens but I yearn for longer reach. I don't know a whole heck of a lot about lens shopping. Is this lens like super old or bad? Is that why it feels like a good price?

I found the Sigma for $300 on ebay used, and I am wondering if such a lens is practical for carrying and manually shooting without a tripod or if I am way off here.

The listing also specifies that it is for Canon, but not EF. I assume it would have to be EF because it does look a little older.

Are there any other lens suggestions around 500mm for under ~400 that I should be looking into?

Thanks for your time!
