I’m looking for a book I read as a child, probably during the 80s. All I remember about it is that it is a science fiction story about an astronaut who goes to space and suffers radiation sickness. I remember what I felt at the time were graphic descriptions of his hair falling out as he realised what was happening to him.

Can anyone help me find out what it was called?
