Can Fulbright help fund the first year of a PhD? First-gen student trying to understand the process
Hi everyone! I’m a first-generation college student and currently a senior finishing my bachelor’s degree. I’m planning to apply to PhD programs this fall with the goal of starting in Fall 2027, and I’m also planning to apply for a Fulbright this year as U.S. student to go abroad.
I’m most nervous about is graduate school funding. I don’t have many people in my family or personal network who have gone through the PhD application process, so I’m still trying to understand how funding packages, fellowships, and outside awards all fit together. I started emailing faculty and some told me they are unsure they will take on students because they do not have funding right now.
I’ve been looking into Fulbright and am very interested in the opportunity to conduct research abroad, but I’m a little confused about how the timing would work alongside starting a PhD. Could Fulbright potentially be used as a way to fund research during what would otherwise be the first year of a PhD, or would I generally need to defer starting my PhD until after completing the Fulbright grant?
For example, if I applied to PhD programs and Fulbright this fall, was accepted to both, and received a Fulbright award for 2027–2028, would I:
- Defer my PhD admission for a year, complete Fulbright, and begin the PhD in Fall 2028?
- Begin the PhD in Fall 2027 and somehow incorporate the Fulbright research into my program?
- Or is there another pathway that students commonly take?
I would especially love to hear from anyone who applied to Fulbright and PhD programs during the same application cycle, particularly if you were coming directly from undergrad. How did you handle the timing, and how receptive were PhD programs to deferring admission for Fulbright?
I’m trying to educate myself as much as possible about graduate funding and the application process, so any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
