Amex travel issue/compensation

I booked and paid in advance for a 5 night start in a.bed and breakfast type spot in Italy. Paid months ago. After day 3 the hotel charged my card in full for stay saying they had never received payment from amex and had no awareness of their property being listed on the platform. Ended up spending more time than I'd love trying to resolve and customer service was snarky and unassuring . I also learned there was quite a price difference between my amex.booking (more) than directly.

I'm mainly annoyed it took 2 hours of phone calls and holds and me following up again to get resolution. What if any recourse have folks gotten in this situation. I'm peeved because of the stress and time but also the rude customer care.
