Dr. Murphy’s Airport Feat
In S1E1, he saved a young boy’s life from a tension pneumothorax at an airport after glass shattered onto the boy, using a bottle of alcohol, a box cutter knife, and a soda machine tube to construct an improvised one-way valve since no proper medical tools were available. He identified the condition as a tension pneumothorax within twenty seconds by observing venous distension in the boy’s cephalic, perforating, basilic, median cubital, and median antebrachial veins. He understood that the one-way valve was critical because, in a tension pneumothorax, trapped air continuously builds pressure inside the chest, and a one-way escape mechanism allows air to exit without allowing more air back in. Throughout the entire procedure, he did not panic even once.
