Any good sci-fi literature set in Tucson?
Tucson resident and sci-fi lover here. I can't seem to find any truly good sci-fi literature that is set specifically in Tucson as its primary setting. Any recommendations?
Best underrated/unknown sci-fi books you've read?
What are the best sci-fi books you'd consider to be underrated and/or unknown to the general community?
For me, Linda Nagada's The Red series of military sci-fi books are a favorite of mine. They perfectly blend this cyberpunk, near future world with military hardware, a cool protag, and politics. While I recognize its got some flaws, I still really enjoy it! Yet despite that, I almost never comes up in discussions.
Want some help in expanding a near future world-building project of mine
Looking for some inspiration and extra eyes on this, but the general ideas is this:
The year is 2087 and much has changed while also staying the same. No cataclysm has befallen humanity to bring it or the Earth to extinction. Climate Change ravaged the Earth between the 2040s and 2060s, but in time the situation got better and the initial crisis is largely over, although much of the world is still hurting. Many governments and organizations of today are still around, while others haven fallen, transitioned, or replaced by something new. China, Europe, and the United States remain the global powers of the world, and are in a new cold war. The Solar system, primarily the Moon and Mars, are new theaters of this cold war. Space colonies, both to the Earth-based states and independent of them, have arose across the Solar System and have brought humanity into a new daring era of exploration and conflict. Transhumanism is on the rise, with some cybernetics and biotechnological augments now available to the average person, as are properly sophisticated A.I.s and new national identities. Increasingly, major resource intensive industries that hurt Earth's environment, like mining, are starting to look to outer space to aquire their resources, offloading the ecological burden from Earth. Massive corporations, both new and contemporary, still hold a lot of power but have been reformed and are generally neutral. Crime internationally is down, with drug trade collapsed due to far safer, non-addictive synthetic drugs taking their place and more advanced medical practices in both technology and general societal views. Wars still happen, crime syndicates still exist, corruption is still here, extremist movements still hurt people, and ordinary people are still just as capable of going out and doing horrible things to other ordinary people. But it's still getting better, and whether you want it to or not, the world is changing.
That's the general overview. What I'm looking for is ideas I haven't thought of or need expanding upon. I still need to work out what exactly happened during the worst of the climate crisis, so help on that would be nice. Also, should I expand beyond the year 2087 and give myself more time to play around with? I'm willing to answer any questions, whether you want to know the history of a specific nation or some of the history of this near future world.
