How Do I fix a pattern where a amigurumi face is skewed with Parfait Chunky Yarn and color changes?
I’m a beginner/intermediate and was trying to do the Miso Monkey beginner pattern from Cuddly Crochet Plushies by Glory Shofowora.
I’ve done two other projects out of this book with cheap acrylic yarn and they turned out pretty good.
This pattern has really perplexed me. The Parfait Chunky yarn worked up really nice. Unfortunately when I got to the face portion of the pattern, it seemed like the face was skewed to the side. I double checked the pattern multiple times. I was able to undo the first few color change rows of the face. I tried to undo that and start again, but it was hard to re use the yarn with all the color change tie offs.
On the 2nd try, I started the color change a few stitches early and it worked better but was still a little bit off, so I started over again.
On the 3rd try, I did the color change a few stitches early but didn’t end it early. This approach worked for the bottom of the face. The top of the face had no clear definition and still seemed a little skewed.
On my 4th try, when I got further (8-10 rows in with a color change every round) I couldn’t undo the yarn. The chenille kept coming off. In my desperation, I literally cut it off with scissors. I ended up making the face by using the accent color and doing single crochet rows with turning chains. Then used the main color around it. It doesn’t look perfect, but it’s a lot closer than what I had during my other tries with the color changes.
I’m probably going to just leave this project as is. It is for a gift but I don’t want to cut the yarn again. I’m unsure if I could even make this look much better than I have currently.
I already bought Parfait Chunky yarn to do another pattern out of this book. The Parfait Chunky isn’t available locally, so I need to order it. It takes anywhere from 3 days to a month to arrive.
Possible options:
Test the pattern first using cheap acrylic yarn
Use the Parfait Chunky, drop the yarn vs tie off for any color changes. Stitch loose and use a larger hook (but not too much, project is for a child). Technique should allow undoing stitches easier
Use an alternative yarn that is available in similar colors. Locally at Michael’s the only alternative I have found that is a similar weight and feel is Loops and Threads at Michael’s. The color selection is limited though.
Stop using the patterns from this book, since the beginner pattern was off.
Any advice appreciated!
