Hello. I am very interested in WW2 military history and have always been fascinated by F4U Corsair, a US carrier based fighter plane that fought in the Pacific against the Japanese. It is commonly known among history fans that the Corsair had a famous nickname, the 'Whistling Death', which is always attributed to have originated from the Japanese who gave it this nickname out of fear of its high pitched sounds as it approached.

While a cool story I have always had my doubts on the authenticity of this story, I have never really found a source or a Japanese equivelent word for this term, all sources come from English, and the only article I found that used a Japanese term seemed to be a botched google translate attempt from my limited understanding of Japanese in the 2nd picture, '(口笛を吹く死/kuchibue wa fuku shi)'.

My question for anyone who is fluent or native in Japanese and knowledgable in the cultural context of Japanese naming practices is:

1. Does the name 'Whistling Death' have an approiate equivelent term that makes grammatical and contextual sense in Japanese?

2. What would your translation of the term 'Whistling Death' be in Japanese?

3. Would Japanese of the 1940s likely to use such naming convention, would it sound to foreign or inline with Japanese cultural context?
