Can Now Confirm: 21 Bridges Rips
Picked up a second-hand blu ray copy of 21 Bridges recently based almost entirely on Chris Ryan's enthusiasm for it. Finally watched it today, and can happily confirm he's made a believer out of me. Maybe this is a Floyd Gondolli situation, but even though I'm a sucker for mid-budget crime dramas, it's still rare to see one that really nails it.
I think any fan of Hell or High Water or Den of Thieves will enjoy this, but the film 21 Bridges probably reminds of the most is the recent Netflix movie Reptile, which I also have a lot of love for (particularly Alicia Silverstone's performance). In this case there's the addition of a ticking clock/all-in-one-night device that gives the whole thing a relentless momentum.
Some people may find it a little too by-the-numbers, but the moody direction and great performances from Boseman, Miller, JK Simmons, and (wtf?!?) Taylor Kitsch make the ride so enjoyable that it doesn't matter if you know where it's going.
Let's get it on the calendar, guys. I can already see my first rewatch coming.
