No, you can't put out a personal ad for a white roommate

So, I kept wondering as I watched Single White Female for the first time this week, "How is it legal to advertise for a specific race of roommate?" I figured they would address this in the pod, but since they didn't, I found the very straightforward answer: it's illegal today, it was illegal in 1992, and it's been illegal since 1968. The Fair Housing Act explicitly forbids this kind of racial housing advertising. I guess personal ads just didn't enforce this part of the law? Read more here if you're curious.

Blame It On Rio

While on a family vacation a middle aged businessmen (Michael Caine) cheats on his wife with the 17 year-old daughter (Michelle Johnson) of his business partner, but it’s okay… because it was a different time… 1984. The 17 year-old attempts suicide with birth control pills. She is taken to the hospital where she hooks up with a male nurse. Her family is so relieved her parents fly back to America and let her stay for another week at the beach house in Rio with the 15-year-old daughter of Michael Caine’s character and the male nurse. Michael Caine’s and his wife (who was having an affair with the business partner) go to a private resort to work on their fractured marriage. Everything works out for the best of year later. This was on HBO a lot when I was a kid.

Theme months only work if the tie-in is vague and open-ended, otherwise it can get very repetitive and same-y

Comedy Month seemed like a good idea, but then turned out in a whole lot of “Remember this quote? That was funny, eh” and “This couldn’t have been made today”.

I’m afraid something similar will happen with From Hell Month. The premises of these movies are too similar, all from the same era… It’ll get old fast. Same would happen with Slasher Month, Heist Month, De Niro Month…

Theme month are cool when it’s something like more nebulous and less straightforward like “Fucked Up Family Month” or “This Movie Made How Much Month”. Then you have a lot of freedom to pick different stuff but still there’s a nice tie-in bringing it all together.

That Guy Mount Rushmore

As a child of the 80s whose formative movie-watching years were 1984-2000, this is my That Guy Mount Rushmore:

David Paymer (City Slickers 1 and 2, Quiz Show, The American President)

William Fichtner (Heat, Contact, Armageddon, Go, The Perfect Storm)

James Rebhorn (Scent of a Woman, My Cousin Vinny, Independence Day, The Game, Meet the Parents)

Stephen Tobolowsky (Spaceballs, Sneakers, Groundhog Day, Single White Female, Memento)

Prediction: Bill will say “Isn’t he Stephen Tobolowsky though?” when discussing the ‘That Guy’ award for “Single White Female”

What’s the most underrated movie of all time and why is it Troy?

Should be a episode when the Nolan film comes out… whenever I see it on randomly, it always draws me in and I lose an hour plus of my life to it lol

Sean Fennessey award for stealth homage that gives every movie nerd a Criteriograsm: Explosive bolts

Such a great clip on the video pod I watched it over and over. Shoutout Sean cheesing so hard.

Spielberg - “I never saw that. You know something- I’m having such a good time talking to both of you about this movie but that one insight just makes this day.”

Goddamn, Jason. I didn’t know I was working with super podcaster

You better tighten up those questions and get to the point, or you’re going away a long fucking time, big boy.

What is the best of Brad Pitt's "untamed spirit" heartthrob roles? Where his main responsibility is to look into the middle distance and be impossibly handsome?

Complete Tragedy we came so close to Russillo /FEAR Rewatchable

Russillo had noted multiple times his interest in FEAR Rewatchable. The movie is currently available on TUBI. Mark Wahlberg plays ultimate BOYFRIEND from HELL
This is From Hell month.. It makes me so sad inside that magic was so close to fruition.

What’s everyone’s dream rewatchables episodes?

For me I have
vanilla sky
gone baby gone (Sean has said bill thinks it’s too sad… I’d argue Manchester by the sea was sadder)
popstar:never stop never stopping
the prestige
punch drunk love
you can count on me
kiss kiss bang bang
tootsie
the informant!
seven psychopaths
in Bruges
dogma
jersey girl
the apartment (definitely a pipe dream, I don’t think they’ll ever go as far back as 1960 for a film)

Wondered what everyone else had, maybe I’m just too obsessive and a little too Sean brained.
