Approved! Marriage-Based AOS with 3 Red Flags — My Experience & Evidence

I wanted to share my experience because I know how much anxiety I had reading other people’s posts while preparing for my interview. My case had three things I considered red flags, and I was very worried about how USCIS would view them.

I was approved, and I received my physical green card today, August 20, 2026.

Disclaimer: This is my personal experience, not legal advice. Every case is different.

Background

I’m from Venezuela. I entered the U.S. on a B-2 tourist visa in the summer of 2018. I later had 3–4 approved extensions of my B-2 stay, followed by TPS, which was approved around 2020/2021.
I met my husband in 2022. At the time, I was living in one city in Florida and he was living in another city about three hours away. We developed a serious relationship, saw each other regularly, met each other’s families, traveled together, and eventually decided to get married.
We filed our marriage-based AOS package ourselves. USCIS received it on November 7, 2025.
My husband is a U.S. citizen.

🚩 Red Flag #1: B-2 History + Multiple Extensions
I had entered the U.S. as a tourist and later received 3–4 approved extensions of my B-2 stay before receiving TPS.
This was one of the things I was concerned USCIS might question.
The officer did not ask about my B-2 extensions during the interview.

🚩 Red Flag #2: We Were Living Separately After Marriage
We got married in November 2025, but we were still living separately because I had professional commitments that I needed to complete before relocating.
This was one of the things I was most nervous about because I knew the officer could question why a married couple was not living together.
Interestingly, the officer barely focused on this. She made a comment along the lines of “Long-distance relationships are hard,” and moved on.
Later, she asked about my living situation and whether I was still in my apartment. I explained that my lease had ended, we had already moved my belongings, and I was in the process of relocating.
She also asked about our financial evidence, including whether we had a joint bank account and housing documentation. We explained our situation and provided the evidence we had.

🚩 Red Flag #3: Unauthorized Employment
My employment authorization was valid through November 7, 2025.
I continued working without employment authorization from approximately November 2025 through July 2026.
This was the issue I was most nervous about.
The officer asked whether I had worked without authorization, where I worked, the name of my employer, and for how long.
I answered honestly.
She asked the questions and then moved on.

Evidence We Brought
Because of our living situation, I wanted to document our relationship as thoroughly as possible.
Financial Evidence
We brought:
2025 joint federal tax return
Both W-2s
Recent pay stubs
Updated employment letter
Life insurance showing me as beneficiary
Costco membership
Car insurance with both names and address
Documentation showing our attempt to open a joint bank account
Relationship Evidence
Updated photographs from holidays, family gatherings, and trips
Call logs covering our relationship
Samples of text messages
Updated relationship timeline
Travel Evidence
Documentation from trips we took together, including airfare, hotels, and activities
Upcoming Religious Wedding Evidence
This was one of the largest sections of evidence we brought.
We had:
Church reservation/confirmation
Church donation receipt
Pre-Cana registration
Pre-Cana payment confirmation
Pre-Cana certificate
Wedding invitations
Invitation printing receipt
Wedding dress contract
Dress deposit and payment confirmations
Venue rental receipt
Restaurant contract and deposit
Photographer contract and deposit
Makeup contract and deposit
The officer actually made a copy of our wedding invitation.
Evidence of My Move
Apartment lease showing the end of my lease
Documentation showing there was no option to extend
Moving box receipts
Photos of the move
USPS change-of-address confirmation
Evidence of my move to a different city in Florida

The Interview — August 3, 2026 (Miami Office)
We waited about an hour before being called.
I was extremely nervous beforehand, but once they called us, I suddenly felt ready.
The officer was incredibly kind and relaxed. The interview felt much more like a conversation than an interrogation.
She asked how we met and then looked through our photographs, asking questions and making conversation about the people and events in the pictures.
She asked about our jobs, our living situation, our financial evidence, and my unauthorized employment.
She also asked whether the person who performed my medical exam was male or female. I hesitated and initially gave an answer, then corrected myself. She simply moved on.
At one point she asked what new evidence we had brought.
I told her we had updated financial evidence, wedding evidence, move evidence, travel evidence, etc.
She said, essentially:
“Give me everything.”
So I did.
At the end, she told us that if it were up to her, everything looked great/perfect, but she needed to send the case for supervisory review before she could give us the final approval.
She said we should hear back within the timeframe she gave us.

Approval 🎉
Filed: November 5, 2025
USCIS received: November 7, 2025
Interview: August 3, 2026
Approval: August 14, 2026
Card produced: August 18, 2026
Card received: August 20, 2026

Filing It Myself
I prepared and filed the entire AOS package myself. I did not have an attorney prepare the original filing.
ChatGPT was an enormous help throughout the process. I used it to help me understand the forms and requirements, organize my evidence, create my relationship timeline, organize my interview binder, and practice interview questions.
I later hired an immigration attorney to accompany me to the interview and to help me evaluate the legal issues surrounding my case.
Obviously, ChatGPT is not an attorney and cannot replace individualized legal advice, but it was an incredibly useful tool throughout the process.
I wanted to share this because I know how scary it can feel when you have complicated parts of your immigration history and you’re preparing for an interview.
My case had three things I was very worried about:
B-2 history with multiple extensions
Living separately after marriage
Unauthorized employment
I was prepared to explain everything honestly and brought substantial evidence showing our relationship and our life together.
And today, I have my green card in my hands. ❤️
Hope this helps someone who is currently preparing for their own interview.

Marriage-based AOS interview: Anyone here had to discuss unauthorized employment?

I’m looking for firsthand experiences from people who had a marriage-based Adjustment of Status interview and had worked without authorization at some point before receiving their new EAD.

I’m not looking for legal advice (I’m already speaking with my attorney). I’m just trying to understand what actually happens during the interview.

If this applied to you, I’d appreciate hearing:
Did the officer ask about the unauthorized employment?
If so, what kinds of questions did they ask?
Did they ask where you worked, for how long, or how you were paid?
Did they ask for any documents or proof?
Did they ask for your employer’s name?
Did they ever contact or mention contacting your employer?
Was it just a few questions before moving on, or did they spend a lot of time discussing it?
Did it seem to have a significant impact on your interview?

The reason I’m asking is because one of my biggest concerns is whether answering these questions could create problems for the employer. I absolutely intend to answer every question honestly if asked, but I’m trying to understand what people’s actual interview experiences were and how detailed the questioning became.

I’m especially interested in experiences from immediate relatives of U.S. citizens, since I understand the immigration rules can be different depending on the type of case.

Again, I’m only looking for firsthand interview experiences so I know what kinds of questions to be prepared for. Thank you!

Waited 20+ years to see Hilary Duff… and immigration scheduled my interview the next morning 😭 (selling 2 Bristow tickets)

You won’t believe this.

I’ve wanted to see Hilary Duff since 2004. I was completely obsessed with her as a little kid. She even came to Venezuela with her tour in 2005, but my dad decided I was too young to go and told me: “Don’t worry, you’ll have many opportunities to see her.”

Well… turns out that was my first and last chance.
Until now.

When tickets dropped, I got 1 ticket for West Palm Beach ($166 during presale) since I live in Florida. Long story short, life happened and that day I had to be in another state, so I ended up giving my ticket away (at least someone got to enjoy it 🥲).

Then I found another opportunity: 2 tickets for Bristow, VA for August 2 ($75 each). I convinced my fiancé to come with me, we turned it into a whole DC trip, got tickets for the DC Open too… literally the perfect plan.

AND THEN…

Yesterday I got a notice from immigration.
My very long-awaited interview got scheduled for August 3 at 8:30 AM.
The concert is Sunday, August 2 at 7 PM.
I tried EVERYTHING to find a late flight back and basically… they don’t exist in a way that gets me there in time.
So here I am: trying to sell my beloved tickets (and vent a little 😭).

BUT the plot twist is… after DC I was originally supposed to go to NYC anyway and I realized Hilary is playing MSG on August 4 and 5, so maybe this isn’t over after all 🥹

After all these years… I still might finally see her.

If anyone is interested in the 2 Bristow tickets, I’m just hoping to get back what I paid ($75 each).

Anybody from the paused/banned countries received their work permit recently? Is there anything we can do to move things forward?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask if anybody from one of the currently paused / affected countries has received their work permit (EAD) recently, especially through Adjustment of Status.

I filed a marriage-based AOS in November and I’m still waiting — no interview yet and no work permit.
What confuses me is that my parents applied for asylum-based work authorization and received theirs within about two weeks, so I’m wondering if different categories are moving at completely different speeds or if some applications are just not moving at all.

If you’re from one of the affected countries:
What category did you apply under? (AOS, asylum, TPS, etc.)
When did you file?
Did you receive your EAD?
Which service center (if you know)?

Also — has anybody had success doing something proactive?
Contacting a congressman / senator?
Filing an expedite request?
Submitting an inquiry?
Talking to USCIS?

Anything else that actually helped?

I know processing times vary, but I’m trying to understand whether cases are moving at all or if people are just waiting.

Thank you 🙏

Did Hilary Duff ticket prices completely crash? What is going on?

Is anyone else noticing a huge drop in ticket prices for the Hilary Duff concerts?

I bought my ticket during the pre-sale for the West Palm Beach show and paid around $160 for a solo ticket. Now I’m seeing tickets listed for $27. Is this real life? 😭

The situation is even worse for me because I won’t be in Florida in June anymore, so I ended up buying a ticket for the Bristow show since I’ll be in the DC area that weekend. I’ve been trying to sell my West Palm Beach ticket for what I paid (first through Vivid Seats, then through Ticketmaster), but now Ticketmaster shows that resale is disabled for my ticket.

When I go back to Vivid Seats and see all the tickets selling for so much less, I honestly want to cry.

Can someone explain what’s happening? Is demand just much lower than expected? Did they release a ton of additional tickets? Why would resale suddenly be disabled?

Curious if anyone else is in the same situation.

Affordable vintage car rental for wedding photos in Miami?

Hi everyone!
I’m planning a very small intimate wedding in Miami and I’m looking for a vintage Volkswagen Beetle (or any classic/old car) for about 1 hour mainly for wedding photos and a short ride after the ceremony (7min).
Most of the wedding rental companies I’ve found start around $500+, which is a bit hard to justify since we only need it briefly.

Does anyone know:
local VW owners
classic car clubs
smaller rental companies
Turo listings
or anyone who rents vintage Beetles for photos/events?

The wedding vibe is very romantic/cinematic, not luxury or extravagant — just looking for something charming and authentic 😊

Ideally in the Miami / Buena Vista / Wynwood area.
Thank you so much!

Work Permit Approved after 1 week of submission (asylum case - Venezuela)

Hello! My dad filed his asylum case in October 2025 and submitted his work authorization application about a week ago (May 2026). This week he received two notifications: first, an approval notice for the work authorization, and then another notification saying the card was being produced/printed.

Of course that sounds like great news, but my question is… is this actually happening? And if so, how is it possible if the ban/pause is supposedly still in place?

I told my dad not to get too excited yet because I’m honestly skeptical, so I wanted to ask if anyone here has had a similar experience recently. Did you actually receive the card, or are you still waiting?

What makes me even more confused is that I filed for Adjustment of Status and work authorization in November 2025, and both of my cases are still pending with no updates at all. Meanwhile, my dad got these notifications after just a week, so naturally I’m very confused.

Any insight would be appreciated!
