Looking for suggestions
Hey friends,
My 3 year old is getting ready to start school. He was diagnosed with CP at 10m or a year, which we expected due to an IVH at birth.. We were told that due to extent of his injury he might not walk, talk, crawl… but he is or has done all of those things, just at his own pace and his own way. We have been doing therapy (OT/PT) since he was 6 months old and started speech at least 6 months ago. He has R sided weakness and tightness and is delayed in speech.
Hes amazing. Hes smart and so determined. And he’s got a good attitude despite the red hair (Scottish & Irish). In starting school, he will be starting preschool for 4 days a week in a special education setting, with about an hour of gen pop education. They said we can always pull back, and they are flexible with the time in regular classroom because, well some days are going to be harder than others.
This summer I am going to work to teach us more ASL. We use the basics but any tools I can give him, I want to. We are working on getting a tablet for speech but they warned us that insurance companies are jerks so it might take several attempts.
What are other things I can work on with him to help this transition ? We have talked about slowly tapering off the time we are with him for therapy(because right now we stay with him the whole time). We talked about establishing a routine clock/list/timer that he sees at home. We also talked about making sure to identify feelings (like when he is throwing a fit “i see you are mad, and thats okay, i understand but lets do some counting to help you calm down or i can give you a minute to calm down so we can talk about it)….he likes to be challenged and you can see him just absorbing everything new, and he can identify colors, shapes, numbers, letters…he just can’t say all of them yet. And then working with him on skills like writing, using scissors.. fine motor things.
I appreciate any suggestions you can give and I understand that everyone’s experiences are different as well💜 thanks for reading this small book and hang in there🫶🏻
