Need help finding / selecting new rear brakes for 2016 Surly LHT with 700C Wheels
I bought the bike used a few years ago, added touring bars, put Tektro Rx 6 mini short arm (90mm) V-brakes in the back ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BRVN2KG ) with Tektro road bike aero brake handles in front (not brifters). In the front I was able to keep the center-pull cantilevers. The spring just broke on the rear (pictured below), so I need to replace them (unless I can get a replacement spring?). However, the rear brakes always gave me trouble - one arm would sometimes not return and rub against the wheel, sometimes a weak return on the brake handle no matter how much I adjusted the spring or cleaned them, just overall finicky. Felt like the spring was kind of weak, could be the manufacturer but seemed to be the only option available when I searched. Also, seems these are now discontinued - so I got to thinking it could be an opportunity to upgrade.
From what I understand (please correct me if I'm wrong), using the aero brake handles limits the types of brakes I can use since the travel isn't as long as other kinds of brakes, plus the fender makes things a bit more limiting as well. I've never had good luck adjusting caliper brakes, and thought these would be easier to adjust, but like I've said the spring action has been fickle.
So, my questions are a) can I just upgrade the springs which might solve a few problems, b) should I try to find a replacement or is there a better option I should explore, and c) where do I find either the replacement or better option / where are people ordering parts lately? I've found it really difficult to find bike parts in the last few years, Amazon is hit and miss and while I used to use Nashbar / Performance Bike they don't seem to have much in stock lately after they merged.
Thanks!
