Buying a digital movie doesn’t mean you actually own it, and it feels like a scam
I bought one of my favorite movies on a streaming app a couple of years ago so I could always have it. Last night, I went to watch it and it was completely gone. I checked my account, and it turns out the platform lost the licensing rights to the movie, so they just removed it from my library without a refund.
It made me realize that when we click Buy on these digital platforms, we aren't actually buying the movie at all. We are just paying for a temporary pass to look at it until a corporate contract expires. It feels like legal robbery. If I pay full price for an asset, I should have permanent access to it.
