Records are meant to be broken, but some are meant to be kept for the longest.

Records are meant to be broken, but some are meant to be kept for the longest.

So you can have an idea about the SpiceMania in the 90s:

Spice (Album)

In February 1997, Spice Girls' debut album Spice entered the Billboard 200 at No. 6, breaking the record for the highest-charting debut first career album by a UK group in the US, held by The Beatles in 1964 with their debut album Meet The Beatles!, which entered the Billboard 200 at No. 92.

Spice Girls held that record for 15 years until One Direction's debut album, Up All Night, became the first debut album by a UK group to debut at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200.

Little Mix broke Spice Girls' record for the highest-charting debut album by a UK/ international girl group in the US in June 2013 with their debut album DNA, which entered at No. 4. In 2022, Blackpink broke Little Mix's record when their album Born Pink debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Spice is still today the only album by a UK girl group to reach No. 1 in the Billboard 200 USA, the best-selling album of 1997 in the USA, and the only girl group album to end the year as the best-selling album.

Note: Spice eventually climbed to No. 1 for 5 non-consecutive weeks.

Wannabe (Single)

In January 1997, their debut single "Wannabe" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 11, breaking the record for the highest-charting debut first career single by a UK group in the US, held by The Beatles in 1964 with "I Want to Hold Your Hand", which entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 45. Spice Girls still hold that record.

Note: Wannabe eventually climbed to No. 1 for 4 consecutive weeks and is the 10th best-selling single of 1997 in the USA.

The record for the Highest debut by a UK group on the US singles chart was held by the Spice Girls for 15 years with "Say You'll Be There," which entered the chart straight at No. 5 in May 1997, previously held by the Beatles in 1964 with "Let It Be" No. 6, was broken by One Direction's single "Live While We're Young", which entered the Hot 100 at No. 3 in 2012.

Even today, Wannabe is still the highest-charting debut first career single by a UK group in the US, and the best-selling single by a girl group in the US.

Say You'll Be There is still the highest-charting debut by a UK girl group in the US.

Extra: 2 Become 1 is the 5th Highest debut by a UK group on the US singles chart, which entered at No.6 on 16 August 1997.

Would a Spice Girls documentary crack the top 10 on Netflix USA?

The Victoria Beckham docuseries successfully cracked the Top 10 on Netflix in the United States, peaking at #3 during its debut week, and pulled in 5.6 million global views in its opening week, and hit #1 on the Netflix charts in 23 countries, including the UK, and placed in the Top 10 across 33 other territories globally.

I think if the Spice Girls give Netflix the Spice World THE MOVIE and they release the documentary at the same time, the movie will hit #1 in the top 10 films, and the documentary will hit #1 in the top 10 series, both in the same week.

Here is the list of UK music artists' documentaries that cracked the top 10 in the USA:

Victoria Beckham (Victoria Beckham) – Peak: #3

Wham! (Wham!) – Peak: #4

Robbie Williams (Robbie Williams) – Peak: #5

And notable "Misses" That Failed to enter the Top 10 USA:

Take That

Oasis / Liam Gallagher (As It Was)

The 1996/1997 Spice Girls Debut Sales Breakdown

Back in the 1990s, before the internet and instant access to international music, global fans had to wait patiently for artists to debut in their respective countries officially. The Spice Girls launched this global strategy by first debuting in their home country, the UK, in 1996, before expanding across the Atlantic to the USA in 1997.

Below is a detailed chronological breakdown of how "Spicemania" spread in the UK and in the USA, driving millions of sales purely through physical CDs and cassette tapes.

🇬🇧 1996: The UK Launch

Before conquering the globe, the phenomenon began at home. In 1996, the UK became the epicenter of Spicemania, driving massive physical sales of CDs and cassettes in just a few short months.

Note: The sales are only in the calendar debut year 1996, not the total sold.

The Album

  • Spice
    • Sales: 1.54 million copies
    • Chart: #1 (5 weeks + 10 weeks in 1997)
    • 1996 UK Year-End Chart: #2

The Singles

  • "Wannabe"
    • Sales: 1.20 million copies
    • Chart: #1 (7 consecutive weeks)
    • 1996 UK Year-End Chart: #2

    • Chart: #1 (1 week + 2 consecutive weeks in 1997)
    • 1996 UK Year-End Chart: #5

Total 1996 UK Single Sales: 2.56 million physical copies

🇺🇸 1997: The USA Explosion

By 1997, the wave crossed the Atlantic. Due to delayed international release schedules of the 90s, American fans had to wait until 1997 to buy the music, resulting in an unprecedented, multi-platinum retail explosion.

Note: The sales are only in the calendar debut year 1997, not the total sold.

The Albums

  • Spice
    • Sales: 5.30 million copies
    • Chart: #1 (5 non-consecutive weeks)
