Frustrating day & joystick issues

Today’s mowing was frustrating as S*&#. I have had some good runs lately but today was skipped patches, a run right through the middle of the mowed lawn to get to a small area it missed, and the overlap was crappy. I’ll spare you the photos. Looks like mohawk haircuts on my lawn. I decided to mow the rest of the zones manually via the app and that’s when I really got in a bad mood.

In the video you can see the mower overreacting or responding late to commands so every time I tried to mow an edge or even start a straight line the mower over compensated so I was constantly back and forth. When I finally finished, the mower was put in "time out" with a battery pull. We’ll see how it behaves next time. It’s like wondering if your favorite musician is going to show up for their show drunk or not.

Now that this post is way too long, has anyone else experienced this? If you have, was there ever a definitive fix that you found or is it just another One Plus issue to live with? It is exhausting to monitor this each and every time. Thanks. Oh, thought I would add that accuracy was 0.008 the whole time.

Drunk logic

Not sure what the mower was thinking this time around but it just doesn’t seem like it should be that hard to get a clean mow. I have had a few and the lawn looks exceptional afterwards - but this??

The closest wandering path is back to the side by the road to mow two rows it missed when it started. Huh? The second path is back from mowing those two rows to finish a tiny section in the upper left of the screen that it didn’t get to in an orderly fashion.

I am not sure why the logic can’t be better about planning out how to mow a zone. Seems pretty simple if you have ever mowed a lawn on your own.

But I am left with these curly paths across the front lawn and the neighbors point and laugh. Well, not actually but I can tell they are thinking it. Well, maybe I am making all of that up and the neighbors could care less. 😂

What in the eff is it now?

I thought there was an improvement after 2.1.49.1 as I had a couple of OK mows in my backyard but since then I want to smash the mower with a sledgehammer. I have quite the collection of drunken sailor moves on video. Today’s mow was filled with BS. Bad perimeter mowing, missed rows, “S” patterns in what should be a straight row, missed patches of grass, 360 spins. Falling off the curb into the street - which it has never done. It goes left/right back and forth on straight paths and channels. All with accuracy at 0.01 to 0.02.

Frustration is through the roof. I didn’t sign up to beta test. Not sure if I will be successful in posting all of the videos and photos so I may have to add a few in comments. Pulled the battery overnight (because it stopped charging) and that hasn’t helped. I am mowing every other day now. I just need it to work!!! I spent about 20 extra minutes touching up the areas it missed today.

PSA on “one-time settings"

I sent some info to Lymow on this and thought I would also post it here in case it might save someone a scalped lawn.

When you pause during a mow to change a setting, (blade speed, height, etc.) a one-time settings menu pops up where you can make the changes. Just beware that the one-time settings are pulled from the ether and do not match your global settings. I found that out after I scalped about 15 feet of my lawn.

Not a big problem once you are aware of it. I am posting a screenshot of my global settings and the one-time settings that come up. I have asked them to make the one-time settings default to be the same as the global. Seems to make more sense. I assume this is true for the One also since this is app driven.

Something positive for GPS - I hope!

I decided to do the latest update on my One Plus to 2.1.49-1 which includes the throttle down on the blade speed to help with overheating. I didn’t intend to go with this version but didn’t update to the previous one in time to avoid it. The mower updated with no problems, FYI.

So two things. First, I really wanted some improvements in the location accuracy in my back yard. I believe Lymow delivered! Still testing but here is what support replied to me a while back on one of my tickets and why I decided to do the update:

“In response to recent user requests for higher location accuracy, we have released a new firmware version, 2.1.49. You can try to update the firmware to this version to see if it can bring a better user experience. This version optimizes RTK positioning accuracy and improves network signal coverage.”

I was able to let the mower operate on its own twice (while observing) on my back lawn so I am happy about that. We will see if it sticks or if it was a coincidence. It seemed to lock on the satellites much better. It is a difficult area with lots of trees and bushes that it handled well before it really filled in this summer so nice to see it have some success again.

Secondly, I could definitely hear the blade speed change when the firmware detected overheating. It seemed to be kicking in a little early. Just to be safe, I guess. I haven't had the cut outs since I covered my deck so when I heard the motor speed dropping my first thought was “oh crap what is going wrong now” and then I remembered the firmware release. I would think that it compromises the cut quality a little but in the area that it happened in, it was difficult to tell. You could definitely hear the blade speed changing back and forth. Probably did it 3 times on that one zone. It sounds a little strange but continued to mow the entire time.

Anyway, I thought the update deserved a positive mention. Thank you Lymow.

Edit: Thought I would add that before this update, I was anywhere from 0.8 to 1.6 or worse on accuracy. It is a tight area so that was not working for me. The past two mows, it was 0.02 for the most part. Occasionally getting to 0.5 for a short stretch then back to 0.02.

Rover RTK antenna future upgrade?

If my L1+ makes it through the mowing season, I am thinking about doing a rover rtk antenna upgrade. My back lawn area has really grown in this season and until the leaves drop, I am mowing using the joystick. Fortunately it is not a huge area.

I noticed that yarbo has an external antenna upgrade that is supposed to vastly improve the sat reception of their rover for improved accuracy under trees and difficult terrain. So I did some searching on AtoZ and found these two items. I know it is a deep dive to get to the board in the rover and it will take some time so I am thinking this winter when I have some down time with the machine.

I was wondering if anyone that knows more about this than I do could chime in and let me know if you think it would be an improvement and if it is doable. I have very low sat reception with my rover - usually from 9 to 16 satellites so if I could even pick up a few more, I think it would help a lot.

I have tossed the idea (but not these particular products) of an external antenna to Lymow but doubt they would have time to work on this for the foreseeable future. Too many other alligators nipping at their behinds.

Thanks.

When it works...

Nice looking cut when everything is in sync. What I envisioned when I spent the $3k on Blade Runner. Hot, sunny day with no issues. I will try power setting next time instead of standard blade speed.

I did the vinyl wrap and I am completely disappointed in the brand I used (Vvivid). As you can see in the video it is bubbling and peeling. After lots of time and effort, I will probably give the plasti-dip a try. Used to work in the sign biz so still have all the tools - squeegee, heat gun, burnishing brushes - nothing works for long on this brand. Should have tried 3M or something else.

Maybe LemonMow has some good stickers for our mowing decks on the way so I don’t have to do this again!

Normal behavior of L1+ when STOP is pressed?

What should happen when you hit the STOP button? Clearly the blades should stop and forward motion should stop but should it also engage braking?

When I hit STOP while my One Plus is running - either program mow or manual/joystick mow - the mower is fairly easy to push along. If it is on a steep hill, it will slowly roll forward/backward. Is this normal? I would prefer that the wheels lock up until the STOP is pressed again.

I have tested repeatedly and if I am mowing manually and just stop any forward/backward motion, it stays put and if I hit that STOP button, it is easy to push. In robot mode, same behavior.

Just wondering what normal behavior is supposed to be. I have searched here and the unofficial manual (thank you for that BTW) and can’t find any indication what the intended behavior should be. Please share your experience.

Thank you.
